Downtown Trick or Treat, Day of the Dead, New Clothing Closet and More In and Around Dixon this Week

Many celebrations in Dixon and Davis. Check out these Halloween and Day of the Dead Patch picks for the week ahead.

1. UC Davis talk on mosquitoes 

UC Davis postdoctoral researcher Bobby Reiner, a statistician, biostatistician and a disease ecologist studying mosquitoes, will speak on “A Quantitative Method for Estimating Spatio-Temporal Mosquito Abundance” at the Department of Entomology and Nematology’s next seminar, set from 12:10 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30 in 122 Briggs.

Reiner, a RAPIDD (Research and Policy in Infectious Disease Dynamics) postdoctoral fellow, studies with UC DavisProfessor Thomas Scott, a  worldwide expert on the epidemiology and prevention of dengue.  Scott chairs the mosquito-borne disease modelling group in the RAPIDD program of the Science and Technology Directory, Department of Homeland Security, Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health.

“Dengue takes an enormous toll on human health worldwide, with as many as 4 billion people at risk," said Scott.

Reiner received his doctorate in statistics in 2010 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He began his academic studies in California, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics in 2002 from UC Berkeley. He went on to obtain his master’s degree in applied mathematics from California State University, Northrdige, in 2005; and his master’s in statistics from the University of Michigan in 2009.

3. Hidden Treasures Clothing Closet

Dixon Community Church is opening a clothing closet. We will be offering clean, gently used clothes to families in Dixon who are in need. 

4. Day of the Dead Celebration

Gallery 1855 at the Davis Cemetery District 820 Pole Line Road (corner of E. 8th St. and Pole Line Rd.) Davis

The Davis Cemetery District and Arboretum is collaborating with Ethnic Studies Faculty at Woodland Community College, as well as the Forbes family, to host a free Day of the Dead Celebration on Saturday, November 2, 2013 beginning at 11:30 AM on the historic grounds of the Davis Cemetery. Please come be part of this celebration with Mexica danzantes, Native drummers, speakers, poets, and music honoring all, including internationally recognized Native Studies Scholar Jack Forbes. Please feel free to bring objects honoring loved ones to be placed on the altar.

5. Non-Profit Mosaic Tea and Coffee Launch Party

Davis Community Church, Fellowship Hall 412 C Street

Saturday November 9th at 1:00 pm, the community is invited to Davis Community Church's

Fellowship Hall to attend a Mosaic Tea and Coffee "Launch Party" celebrating the start of the implementation phase of a plan to open DCC's non-profit Mosaic Tea and Coffee Shop.
