Dixon High School hosts a concert featuring jazz soloist Bob McChesney

When the musicians of Dixon High’s Concert and Jazz bands take the stage on Monday at DHS’ performance theater, they will be doing so with a Los Angeles-based jazz great.

“We are bringing in a guest from Los Angeles, Bob McChesney, one of the most outstanding virtuoso trombone players in the world today,” DHS Band Director Adrian Coulson said.

Each year Coulson brings in guest musicians to play alongside DHS students, partly to inspire them as musicians, and partly to give them a taste of what its like to play with professional musicians.

McChesney is a teacher at California State University, Long Beach and Northridge, Coulson said, and has an extensive career as a performer and studio musician. His list of credits include recordings with Ray Charles, Barbara Streisand, Michael Bolton, Michael Bublé and Shakira. Film and television credits include “Rocky Balboa,” “Space Jam,” and “The Simpsons.”

Before McChesney takes the stage in Dixon, he will visitas a guest and talk with the students, Coulson said. Then at 7 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 27, McChesney and the rest of the DHS musicians will take the stage at DHS’ performance theater.

“He’s the best trombone player that has or ever will come to Dixon,” Coulson said. “He’s the kind of guy you might get at Mondavi. To have someone of that caliber in our town, I think, is extraordinary.”

Tickets can be purchased at the box office for $10 or $8 in advance directly from Coulson by calling (707) 592-3371.
