Update: Brian Dolan Named Interim DUSD Superintendent, Halberg to Retire

During an emergency special meeting of the Dixon Unified School District Board of Trustees, the Board named Assistant Superintendent Brian Dolan as its interim superintendent

Last night during an emergency, closed-session meeting of the Board of Trustees, the board named Assistant Superintendent Brian Dolan as its interim superintendent.

Last week, current DUSD Superintendent Roger Halberg submitted his resignation to the board after announcing that he was a candidate for a superintendent’s position at a San Diego school district.

The details of Halberg’s contract however, were never finalized with that district and Halberg instead chose to retire from Dixon Unified DUSD Board President John Gabby said.

“Instead of relocating to a different (school district), he is going to retire altogether,” Gabby said.

In a statement Halberg wrote: “I have explored retiring for the past couple of years and most recently as this past January.  The numbers work out for me to retire at this time and allow me to move on to the next stage in life.”

Halberg’s final day with DUSD is set to be around mid August, perhaps the 18th or 19th, Gabby said. Halberg is set to burn off the rest of his accumulated vacation time before retiring.

“He’s leaving Sunday (for vacation),” Gabby said.

“I will be able to spend a several months in Southern California helping family members with projects while I plan for traveling throughout the United States visiting family and friends,” Halberg wrote.

Meanwhile, the board is in the process of finalizing the interim superintendent contract with Brian Dolan. According to a press release, Dolan is in his 14th year of employment with Dixon Unified.

Dolan has served as a Senior Director, overseeing the district's Human Resources, Human Resources, Facilities/Maintenance and Operations, and Pupil Services. He has also served as an interim principal at Silveyville and Anderson Elementary Schools.

Dolan's first eight years within the district were as principal at Before coming to Dixon, Dolan was the assistant principal at Vanden High School and a teacher and coach at Vacaville High School.

Dolan will take over as interim superintendent on Aug. 1, according to the press release.

“We’ll have his contract complete around the 4th (of August),” Gabby said. “Right now it’s a bad time to hire a superintendent. We are thinking the interim contract will probably be about six months and that way we can let the dust settle. It takes a while to hire a new superintendent. What I think we are going to do is start the new school year with Brian as our superintendent, see how it goes for a couple of months and kind of resume talk about hiring a new superintendent after we see how it goes.”

Dolan wrote in a prepared statement: “I am grateful for the Board’s trust in me to serve during this period of transition. I am committed to serving our students, staff, and community and look forward to the opportunity to provide additional leadership to that which I have already offered.  We have a lot of work to do and the challenges in education have never been greater, but I know that I can count on our staff and community to support us.”
