Should the Dixon School District Speak Out Against Menthol Cigarettes?

Menthol is said to be appealing to youth. Should the school district support a ban?

The Dixon School District is being asked to consider supporting a ban on the use of menthol in tobacco products, an ingredient which many say is intended to target young smokers.

Dixon Superintendent Brian Dolan was contacted by Elena Villalpando, a Health Education Specialist with  Solano County Public Health, about the Governing Board supporting a resolution regarding the ban.

"Substantial evidence exists that tobacco use  among youth remains a problem and that menthol flavoring is a strategy used by tobacco companies to make products more appealing to youth," according to the resolution. "The Board is asked to listen to some of the details regarding the resolution, support for it from  other communities, and take action regarding it."

The resolution will come before the board at this Thursday's meeting, on March 28. Read it in full here
