Watneys Thank Police by Donating Golf Tourney Flag Signed by Son

Nick Watney has been moving up in world golf rankings

Dixon’s police will soon have on display a memento of a Dixon boy who’s gone places in the world: pro golfer Nick Watney.

Nick’s parents, Dixon residents Brent and Debbie Watney, donated a flag commemorating this year’s President’s Cup golf tournament in Australia, which was autographed by their son. Nick was one of 12 Americans playing as a team in that competition, which they won. Brent and Debbie Watney attended.

Because Brent Watney is a volunteer at Dixon’s and the police have been supportive of it, Mr. Watney’s way of saying “thanks” was to donate the flag to the local Police Officers’ Association.

Their son made the President’s Cup team by placing high on a points system. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, only made the team because the team captain had two personal-choice slots to fill.

The next time the Watneys will see their 30-year-old son play is at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii early next month.

Speaking with the Watneys after the flag was presented, Dixon Police Chief Jon Cox said their son Nick was “making Dixon proud.”

Last July, the pro golfer broke into the top ten of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time by winning the AT&T National.

Nick Watney first played competitive golf at Davis High School, followed by Fresno State, where the coach was his uncle, Mike Watney. Nick turned pro in 2003, and also won his first professional victory that year in Canada. The next year he played on the American Nationwide Tour and soon qualified for the PGA Tour. In 2007 he won his first PGA Tour competition at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Now with seven professional wins, Watney has become one of the world’s best golfers.

He lives in Henderson, Nevada and is married. It's said that his favorite drink is chocolate milk, and his favorite course is Pebble Beach.
