Update: Victim Identified in Early Morning I-80 Fatal Collision, Two Motorists Arrested

Sacramento man dies in early-morning crash along Highway 80 Sunday; Two motorists arrested in connection with the crash

The Solano County Coroner's Office has identified a man struck and
killed on Interstate Highway 80 in Vacaville early Sunday morning as
37-year-old Gary Hanks of West Sacramento.

An autopsy is pending, a coroner's office spokesman said. Two men were arrested in connection with the crash. The CHP arrested Duan Lee, 28, of Vacaville, on suspicion of murder and felony DUI, and Michael Hackbart, 27, of Fairfield, on suspicion of felony DUI (causing injury).

Hanks was apparently hit while he was outside his vehicle on westbound I-80 at Midway Road just before 3 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers arrived at the scene of the accident -- I-80 at Midway Road -- at 2:56 a.m., Sunday morning.

According to the CHP Hanks was standing to the left rear of his vehicle, a GMC Sierra that was parked on the right hand shoulder and fully out of the traffic lanes.

Lee was driving west on the highway, approaching Midway Road, when he allowed his vehicle -- a 1995 Toyota Tercel -- to drift to the right and hit Hanks as he was standing next to his vehicle, according to the CHP.

Hanks was thrown into the west lanes of traffic along Highway 80 and Lee collided with Hank's car, coming to rest on the third lane of traffic along west I-80, the CHP said.

About two minutes after the initial collision Hackbart, who was driving a 2006 Lexus, struck Hanks' body and subsequently collided with Lee head-on resulting in minor-to-moderate injuries to Hackbart's passenger, according to the CHP.

The two right lanes of the freeway were blocked for nearly two hours following the collision, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said this morning.

Lee was taken to Kaiser Hospital in Vacaville to be medically cleared. During the investigation into the cause of the accident, CHP officers determined that Lee was DUI at the time of the wreck and arrested him on suspicion of the aforementioned charges.

Hackbart, who was not injured, was taken to Solano County Jail on suspicion of felony DUI.

Animal control officials were called to take the Hanks' dog, who appeared to be unharmed inside the car, Caggiano said.
