Remembering 2 Dixon Teens, One Year Later

Sunday marked the anniversary of the deaths of Delfino "DelFeezy" Gaona and Alex "Pecas" Silva, two Dixon teenagers who were tragically killed last year in a Sutter County traffic accident.

One year ago, Dixon Patch reported about that took the lives of Alejandro "Alex" Silva, 17, known to his friends as Pecas, and Delfino "Delfeezy" Gaona, 19, both of Dixon.

The accident shook the community to its core because the two teenagers were well known in Dixon and liked by all who knew them. Today, the families of Gaona and Silva are still attempting to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones, and have been supported by the community at Maine Prairie High School and Dixon High School to help them overcome their grief.

Many of Gaona and Silva's friends have taken to Youtube to remember the teenagers and have made videos honoring them. Today, the Sutter County District Attorney's office confirmed that the driver who allegedly caused the accident, Justin Mejia Andrews, has yet to be arraigned on charges of two misdemeanor counts of vehicular manslaughter; one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license/with no insurance; and two traffic infractions of registration fraud and making an unsafe turn.

A warrant for the arrest of Andrews is still outstanding.

The accident occured on the evening of May 7, 2011. Andrews, Gaona and Silva were riding in a vehicle along Highway 99 in Sutter County and were reportedly following another carload of friends.

California Highway Patrol investigators said that Andrews made a left turn onto Nicolaus Avenue, into the path of Yuba City resident Amber Klugh, 28, who was driving north on Highway 99 in a 2005 GMC Yukon.

Gaona was killed instantly during the collision, Silva sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Sutter Roseville Hospital.

Andrews, the driver of the vehicle, also sustained major injuries including a punctured lung and lacerated liver.

After the investigation concluded, the CHP sent over a complaint with recommened charges to the Sutter County District Attorney's office.

Meanwhile, Andrews has left the area and is believed to be in Rock Island Ill.

Today, a memorial garden is installed at in honor of the two teens, a quiet place where their friends and family can go to reflect on their lives.
