Dixon Fire Crews Spearhead Rescue Operation on Liberty Island

Dixon firefighters responded to Liberty Island Road this afternoon to conduct a rescue operation involving 20 or more individuals.

A vegetation fire that sparked on Liberty Island Road, near Levee Road, at 11:34 a.m., prompted a rescue operation involving the Dixon Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol, and Solano County Sheriff's Department.

"Liberty Island is an area that's not accessible to vehicles, frequently used by fishermen and duck hunters," Dixon Fire Chief Aaron McAlister said. "So there's 20 to 30 people who were on this island, the (vegetation) fire started from an undertermined source."

Firefighters were not able to take action on the flames, McAlister said, and the department began evacuating the fishermen, using full marine and air resources provided by the CHP, Coast Guard and Solano Sheriff's Department.

Liberty Island is in Dixon's Fire Protection District, McAlister said, and two fire engines and a duty chief responded to the scene. No injuries were reported and the cause of the grass fire is under investigation.
