Dixon Fire Department responded to a call for a train versus pedestrian this morning at 10:40 AM, which resulted in a fatality.
The identity of the pedestrian is unknown at this time, but is reported to be a Black or Hispanic male.
"The train was a westbound passenger Amtrak car," says Chief Greg Lewis, "it did stop, but it takes a long time for train cars moving 70-80 mph to slow down. Trains move faster than people think."
Chief Lewis offers these safety tips.
- Judging the time it takes to get across the track, relative to the time it will take the train to meet a specific location is difficult to evaluate.
- Use pedestrian crossings
- Never walk along side the tracks
- Never assume you can make it
