Kindergarten Registration Friday; Antiques Over Weekend

Dixon Unified says bring those Kindergartners with you when you register them for school Friday, March 8, at the old Dixon High School gym.

Life’s Too Short

By Debra Dingman

I wish I wasn’t such a sap. I was listening to a woman on the radio who was sharing how her Valentine’s Day went. She started off with regular hearts and chocolates but then told him she had another gift that she would give to him later—which, of course, kept him texting and guessing throughout the day. She told him, “It’s something you already gave me.” Then, right before bed, she told them their positive pregnancy news and the husband had tears of happiness. I’m standing in the middle of the room and cried off my mascara. We have to agree that most babies are conceived in an act of love.

My parents always said I was the tenderhearted child and either I lived up to their expectations or God doused me with sensitivity and it’s gotten worse with age. Nonetheless, I had to get out my 15x make up mirror and re-apply.

It’s going to be a great week. After some minor rain, we are supposed to have a beautiful, sunny weather weekend. I was telling my son and husband that I did read where the groundhog did something and so we’re going to have an early spring. My son looked at me quizzically and said, “I never understood that groundhog thing. Did he or did he not see his shadow?”

“I never can remember,” I replied, “But whatever he did that was supposed to mean an early spring, he did.” This is how our dinner conversations go and why I like my grown children to come over for dinner; it is never a ‘normal’ dinner experience.

Time for Kindergarten Registration

Unlike years past, the Dixon Unified School District is asking parents to bring their Kindergarten student with them to register.  Children must turn 5-years-old before October 1, 2013 to register although children who turn f between October 2 and December 2 may register for Transitional Kindergarten.

The process will begin on Friday, March 8, 9 am to 2 pm at the old Dixon High School inside the big gym. The address is 455 East A Street.

There will be a Kindergarten screening along with several free services including physicals, immunizations (for uninsured and Medical only), dental screenings, healthy snacks and other activities for children.

They are asking parents to also bring proof of immunizations, proof of oral Health Assessment, proof of residence such as a utility bill or rental agreement, and the child’s birth certificate.

Registration packs are available at each of the school sites: Anderson, Tremont, and Gretchen Higgins as well as the District Office.

Antiques Abound at fairgrounds

It’s already here again! This one is a favorite for lots of Dixonites as there is so much to see and learn at the Soroptimist International Annual Antique Sale this weekend. The event opens Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm and runs Sunday, 10 am to 4 p.m. There is $5 admission but free parking. All monies benefit charities supported by Soroptimist International of Dixon.

Steve Yvaska, ‘the Antique Advisor’ will evaluate and identify antiques both days, 11 am to 4 pm for an additional charge of $5.00 per item.

Glass repair, an used book sale from the ‘Friends of the Dixon Library’ and Candy Sales from the Girls Scouts will also happen at the event. For more information, contact Twin Bridges Antique Productions at (530) 241-4063 or go to www.tbcashows.info.

Montessori Dragonfly Dinner on Tap

Corned Beef and Cabbage are on the menu for the Montessori Charter School Annual Dragonfly Dinner, Dance, and Auction to be held Saturday, March 16, 5 – 10 pm at Madden Hall at the Dixon fairgrounds. This is a very large and very fun time for the many families and friends of this growing Dixon school.

Music will be provided by ‘Pushback’ and there will be a huge raffle. In addition, popular auctioneer, Joe Gates, will auction off numerous framed and signed arts.  Tickets are $30 and for more information, you can call (707) 678-8368,

Walmart To Help Cook Pancakes

Tickets are now on sale for the upcoming Kiwanis ‘Breakfast with the Bunny’ on Saturday, March 30, the day before Easter. It will be held at the newly renovated Old Veteran’s Hall, 231 N. First Street, across from the library. It will be from 8 to 10 am.

To my knowledge, this is a first for Dixon, but one I’m not unfamiliar with since I was part of the Downtown Davis Business Association that sponsored the event for many years in downtown Davis.

Children and other fun-loving folks will not only get a hot, delicious pancake breakfast provided and cooked by generous Walmart employees, they will also get to experience some wonderful story times by Kiwanis volunteers like Brittany Slaughter of Miss Brittany’s Preschool Place. The readers will be using books borrowed by the children’s librarian at the Dixon Public Library and will read as part of the Kiwanis international program to ‘Read Around the World.’

You will also see our local Kiwanis Club members helping in all the various capacities, especially guiding the big furry bunny around to visit the children. Tickets are $5 for all ages except under 2-years-old; those little people are free. You can purchase them at Nana & Co. Children’s Boutique, 141 N. First St., also in the heart of Downtown Dixon.
