DDBA Offers Free Business Training to Youth

Thursday Class: Beyond the Lemonade Stand

Young people who want to earn some extra money during their summer break are invited to get some ideas and learn some skills to publicize their business at an upcoming workshop sponsored by the and held at the on Thursday, June 30, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

House sitting, pet sitting, lawn care, car washing, and childcare are just a few of the typical summer job ideas that youth can utilize for earning money--but the creativity doesn’t need to stop there.

One young entrepreneur in Colorado earns $25 a month to scoop up dog poop once a week. Multiply a once-a-week brief morning by only three more neighboring homes and a youth can earn an easy $100 per month with a minimal investment of rubber gloves and a scooper.

“The homeowners spoke highly about the service because their backyard stays nice and they are at an age they don’t want to pick up after their two large dogs,” said Debra Dingman of The Write Mind PR and the DDBA who will teach the class. “The trick for young people is to spread the word about their business and what they offer to friends and neighbors,” she said.

Designing a flyer or business card and knowing how to network is essential to any entrepreneur but especially to young people who are just beginning to step out on the great American dream of business ownership.

Last summer, Devon Minnema used an opportunity at the Farmer's Market to have fun raising a little extra cash to get him to summer camp by selling "Fist Bump Lessons." With several large signs and a great sense of humor, he set up shop. At the time, President Obama had gotten some publicity for using a fist bump instead of a hand shake. Minnema capitalized on the silly notion that a lot of people didn't know how to do a fist bump correctly and for a dollar, carefully instructed proper technique.

"It gave us a lot of laughs and grown men bought into it," he said. Minnema walked away with about $25.00 toward his goal.

The Young People’s Business Class will provide ideas, give suggestions for honing a very basic business plan, getting publicity, safety issues, and a discussion on the importance of customer service.
