Dixon Patch Viewfinder: Twice a Week, Teens Learn Okinawan Karate Discipline

Jim and Kathy Ernest run well-known self-defense center

On a Monday afternoon in mid August, 20 Dixon students ranging from age 10 to 13 showed up at Jim and Kathy Ernest's center for their twice-weekly shorin ryu karate lesson. Karate is a self-defense discipline which originated in Okinawa.

Ramtown Karate is associated with the Ryukyukan karate organization based in that country. Its leader, Hanshi Koei Nohara, visits Dixon every November for black belt testing.

Besides the shorin ryu discipline, the class shown here also learns karate methods from two other disciplines.
