California Duck Days Are Here

Fun and Wildlife Lessons this Weekend in Davis

• California Duck Days, February 25-26, Davis, CA

This California Wetlands Festival is in the heart of the Pacific Flyway. A gala reception and Wildlife Art Show will launch the festivities on Friday evening, February 25, at the Davis Art Center, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and it is free. On Saturday, February 26, the festival will feature one full day of field trips, workshops and other activities at the Yolo Wildlife Area Headquarters facility in South Davis. Admission for workshops and onsite activities is $20; workshops and one field trip is $23 and workshops plus two fieldstrips is $25. Children under 16 are free. Day of Dance for Your Health will be Saturday, February 26 at Westfield Solano Mall in Fairfield. Family and friends will learn simple ways to stay healthy and participate in free women’s health screenings, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. or until supplies run out. There will be dance demonstrations and lessons between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. downstairs at the former Mervyns storefront. Among the dances featured are hip-hop, tap, and jazz plus a little Zumba. NorthBay Healthcare sponsors the event and more information can be found at NorthBayWomen.org.

Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barns – This museum has a permanent collection of Benicia’s beginnings when it was the capitol of California, the Army Camel Corps and the auction of the camels in the 1880s, Benicia Arsenal history, and the history of Solano County. Also on display is a working scale model of a Yuba Manufacturing gold dredge, Commanding Officer Charles P. Stone's journal, Civil War items and a large woodworking tool collection. Lowe's Build and Grow Clinic – Saturday, February 26, 10 a.m. will feature the ‘Pull Back Race Car’ project, which gives children the opportunity to say, “They built it!” Bring your children into any Lowes for a free wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project-themed patch and a certification of merit upon completion of their project. There are four locations in or near Sacramento, one in Woodland, and one in Vacaville. This event is supposed to be at all of them and sounds like fun for the children. Experience the evolution of our organization from its earliest days in 1946, through the purchase of 22 acres of grazing lands in 1960 to start the Western Railway Museum, to the high-quality restorations of today. This program was originally presented as part of the Museum’s 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Shattuck Hotel in June 2010.
