"Healthier Living" free workshop to live better with chronic disease

Do you have, or know someone, dealing with pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems or other chronic health conditions? Help is available through an upcoming series of free “Healthier Living” workshops being offered in English and Spanish in Solano County.

“Healthier Living” is a series of six, 2.5-hour classes that improve health and quality of life by teaching practical, effective ways to manage chronic conditions.

Two, trained peer leaders conduct the highly interactive workshops.

Participants learn the skills needed to manage symptoms, work with health care professionals, set weekly goals for behavior change, problem-solve, handle difficult emotions, eat well, practice relaxation techniques and exercise safely and easily. The workshop is not disease-specific, but it is designed to support and enhance disease-specific education.

“People want to be armed with tools they can use to live a better life and this program provides them with those life-skills,” said Dianna Gonzalez, program coordinator for Area Agency on Aging serving Napa and Solano. “What’s even better is that they can do this at no cost. The workshops bring together people with chronic diseases, their family members and caregivers in a community setting to learn healthier ways to live, gain confidence and motivation to manage their health, and feel more positive about life.”

The AAOA and Solano Public Health are working together to provide the free workshops which are based on Stanford University’s award-winning “Healthier Living Chronic Disease Self-Management Program,” originally developed in the 1990’s. The Solano County workshops are supported by the CA4Health, a project of the Public Health Institute, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Healthier Living” will be offered at various locations throughout Napa and Solano Counties in English and Spanish,” Gonzalez noted. “We are excited to be offering such a prestigious and successful program in our community.”

In Solano, classes will be held in Fairfield, Vallejo and Vacaville. Upcoming classes start at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Community Events Center, Fairfield, and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the William J. Carroll Center in Vacaville.
