The greatest part of this story has yet to be told.
Olivia Simpson’s goat went for such a…Read More high price because the amazing citizens of Dixon were rallying behind her after the incredible illness that has left her fighting for her life for the last two months. Olivia came down with Meningitis and Encephalitis (and several secondary illnesses) in March, and is paralyzed from the chest down; yet her gracious attitude shines through each day without fail. One of the things that kept her going and helping her to fight, was the hope of taking her goat to the Fair. While she wasn't able to make it due to her illness, her younger brother presented it for her. Olivia watched her goat sell via “FaceTime,” and said it was the best day of her life. She’s made an impact on this community like you wouldn’t believe, and when I heard her goat went for that amount, I nearly cried.

Sorry William, but you obviously were not there to understand the meaning behind many of these…Read More animals going so high in price. I disagree that it has become a showboat sale. Granted there are always a few kids that get a good amount for their animal, but also many others that are rewarded for marketing their animals and helping in their community.
William spinetti May 14, 2013 at 07:45 pm
Great. Some girl got little to no money for her pig, and some rich brats parrents paid 9,880 for…Read More hers. Think they coulda helped out another kid?? Ffa sales have turned into a big "show boat sale" for the rich kids to be able to brag. Pisses me off!!

I understood that....seems that some % ought to be considered now that the state funding has gone…Read More down. Really all I care about it the health of the Fair and Fairgrounds. I don't care about the details that much...just that it is being done right so that the Fair can continue.
Greg Coppes May 11, 2013 at 11:45 am
No, All proceeds go to the friends of the fair. The Fair has no control over how those funds are…Read More used. They are not charged rent or fee's. Granted a lot of the money is used for Fair grounds improvements.

We are lucky it doesn't go past Ceremello's house. That would definitely peg us as urban slum.

Lori, I was not addressing your Farm/Ranch. Though you do need to have a future plan for your…Read More property. I know of a few farms on the North East side of the tracks that will someday have to go to a”plan B”.
I was addressing the more industrial properties. They seem to be the real eyesore.
Might be novel for the City, when it can, to buy up some of the properties around town that seem to be at issue and rehabilitate them to the extent that someone else can develop them and keep them up.

Dixon country area is…Read More beautiful .. it's just to bad that not
everyone can keep it clean it orderly ... I guess it's like out of sight out of

I loved been able to see the big picture ... :)

I haven't jumped on the scam bandwagon. I don't like underhanded methods of getting this project in…Read More no matter how good it will be. Sort of like ignoring collateral damage ala Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, FDR, Wilson and all your other "progressive" brethren. Now you didn't think I wasn't going to go political on you somewhere in this response, now did you?
At least you are thinking, Ian. I am just wondering what price you are willing to pay for employment in our community? How many people are you willing to screw because they refuse to go along? Build you a park and contribute to the Teen Center, another worthless effort successful in only keeping kids off the streets, and you don't care how many dead bodies you find along this primrose path.
I want to make this perfectly clear. I would love to see this industry come to town. If it is going to be corrupt and the same as Hollywierd, then I don't want it here or anywhere else for that matter. Carpenter told me this was going to be a "family oriented" film studio. Maybe if your father is mafioso ...
The Great Libertarian April 21, 2013 at 10:18 pm
Ian, I thought you told me you hit me hard on here. I agree with most of what you have said until…Read More you hit me with the Steve Alexander type of figure. You still don't have your facts straight.
You are right about the IV and front page investigative journalism stories. I haven't been writing because I am done doing this for free for this community. Sixteen years is enough. However, printing letters from MV as front page news is hardly a substitute for a quality "news" story. My column *IS* an opinion column based on facts which I put within it. It does not appear on the front page.
The "scam" thing is the minority opinion of many in Dixon. The "profit" comes from flipping the land with a light industrial zoning and land use designation. As Carpenter has never done this in fourteen years, I don't know why some think this is the goal.
I don't disagree with your third paragraph except for the amount of homes. This area had a development agreement calling for the construction of 1400 plus homes. That is a far cry from 4500. I know facts don't bother you any more than they bother Alexander, who had to be corrected three times during the debate that there are only 2600 hookups in DSWA which he ignored all three times, but I thought I would at least try to educate and edify you.
Looks like I will have to continue this in another response ...

Feel free to introduce yourself to me at the next council meeting this coming Tuesday. I will…Read More be sitting in the back as usual until I get bored or thrown out.
I will make it easy on all of you by answering the question of "why would I support or not support this project?"
First off, MV was leaving this town for Fairfield and I, not Gary Erwin and not Mike Smith, suggested they look at the 440 acres in the Southwest. If Carpenter and her flying monkey Smith had been on the up and up, I would still be supporting this project as it is "clean" and mainly low impact.
The reason I don't support it at this point is because Carpenter has taken the bad advice of Smith, who hates the IV, Steve Alexander, and Dave Scholl, almost as much as he hates me for calling him on his perpetual bullshit. Certainly a company or corporation can choose to give exclusives to media outlets but if those outlets refuse to ask tough questions, let alone any questions, it calls the credibility and veracity of those involved into suspicion. This is exactly the reason the IV has been excluded: they can't or don't want to answer *ANY* questions.
When you start talking "eminent domain" to obtain the land or using city government officials to twist the arms of those who own the land and have entitlements worth more than the price being offered, there is a problem.
Carissa Carpenter and her group can either straighten out and play fair, or they can leave ...

Possibly the parent companies which have reported record profits for the last 2 years (didn't pay…Read More attention prior to this it may have been more years) should pay it forward to the independents (Doesn't Safeway falls into this category also). However, maybe I am wrong is Safeway a big chain? If Safeway loses does this mean that all businesses need to stop offering savings by way of coupons and memberships? Possibly a new law should be drafted so that the refinery can't put the squeeze on all of the gas stations so that the majority of the American public can take advantage of savings in order to afford transporting themselves to and from work, school and home. I would welcome anyone to view the profits posted by the big 4 refineries. I'm probably not the best person to be putting forth my views because I am a customer of Chevron in Vacaville and Safeway in Dixon. I split my grocery shopping between Safeway Dixon and Vacaville but I also shop at Costco. I purchase my fuel in Dixon at Valero or Safeway but also purchase my fuel at Costco and Chevron in Vacaville. I don't drive out of my way to purchase fuel I fill up when I am shopping at one of these locations. I only entered into this conserversation because I know there are individuals out there that need every discount they can get. Sometimes I don't use a coupon or discount but I know and support the people that need it. Lets do something about a law that protects the wealth of the refineries on the backs of the public.
Dan Mattingly April 6, 2013 at 06:38 pm
Safeway may have a problem because California law says you cannot discount gasoline below what you…Read More pay the refinery plus a formula to pay for the tanker truck, etc. I don't know what that equation is though. I think this was passed to prevent the big chains from driving the independent's out of business since they have to purchase their gas from the same refinery. Key will be if Safeway can prove even with the discounts, they were still selling gas at or above what they paid for it. If they can't then the independents will be getting a hefty payout. I don;t know how Costco gets away with their low gas prices unless they have an agreement with the refinery for low cost bulk fuel or something. This will be an interesting case.
Bil Paul April 4, 2013 at 03:05 pm
Yesterday regular gas was $3.85 at the least expensive stations in Dixon and a 7-11 store in…Read More Carmichael was selling it for $3.75 -- that station always has lower prices. I agree with you Walt that it's cheaper to buy fuel injector cleaner at Costco etc. and put it in the gas tank yourself rather than buy more expensive Chevron gas with it included. I hate those cute-sy Chevron TV ads that urge you to pamper your car with expensive gas !!

You could be correct. At least you're moving closer to the "let's wait and see" position,…Read More which is where I am. One would think a lot more buzz about this sort of thing would be building considering the fact that the acreage and price tag is so gigantic.
Josh Harris April 26, 2013 at 01:24 am
Power shift away from Hollywood... not towards Norcal. Just decentralization.
Josh Harris April 26, 2013 at 01:23 am
Carol Bauman, you could be correct, but I'm sure you know that the industry has changed a lot since…Read More 2006. Besides, it might not just be stages, it could be an entire new studio attempting to start up, which means more than just stages. To me that means a power shift... if it's legit. But I will say that I have not heard a thing from the people I know down in LA about this deal. Though I stand by my words about how Dixon WOULD be a great spot because of all the reasons I stated (as you might agree since you lived in Dixon and commuted all the way down to San Rafael), the more things drag on with no buzz in the industry or tangible big movements, the more I settle into my initial suspicions. But still, let's wait and see.

Riveting was replaced by welding, we don’t need buggy whip makers anymore because we use cars in lieu of horse drawn carriages and sheet rock and tape replaced the people who used to apply plaster in buildings. Safeway gets robbed everyday by teens stealing alcohol why is that not a story? What happens if one…Read More of these teens dies or kills another? Who is responsible? Safeway can't stop them, the beer is right by the door no where near the cash registers. It is wrong to let teens steal alcohol and for adults to by alcohol for them. I know of many towns that do stings to catch underage alcohol crimes. Did you hart about the football team in Kansas, whole team put in jail for letting the quarterback rape a drunk 16 year old, that could happen here.

Joe you are 100% correct. This topic has everything to do with my experience (38 years of commerical big job sub-contracting) and simply cannot be built by January 2015. A realistic timeline would be 5 to 7 years from this date forward. That is of course if the funding is available. The environmental impact study required by the State of California could bring things to a grinding halt indefinitely along with several other hurdles inherent in a project of this scope. I have read several different accounts of studios trying to build and they have all been upfront…Read More with the public prior to embarking on their attempts. I believe that this group believes in being honest and upfront. They told the community what they want to do and they have offered over market rate for the properties.
I came away from my readings with the feeling that these projects are willing to pay a reasonable sum for the land but they do not want to entertain pirates or greed mongers. They need to be responsible and protect their investor’s assets.
If this group had sent someone in to secretly buy the properties then they would be even more suspect.
At this point I would say trust your local elected officials and paid management team to steer us in the right direction. They have thrown no flags…they seem to be all smiles and have issued no warnings.
About the hold out property owners, let’s be reasonable, others before you with choice locations have accepted the terms. Settle with the studio and let’s move on and build a prosperous future for the town.
The land in question was rezoned for residential more than ten years ago, you knew then that your days were numbered. The offers on the land have been greater than market value… This offer is far better than building more homes…this offer is for jobs in town for thousands of people. You would be better off selling now and then reinvesting in commercial lots and, becoming a more diversified landlord.
