The first book club met on Oct. 27 at the library. Eighteen students attended and began reading "Shiloh" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, a story about a boy who finds and cares for an abused but very affectionate beagle.  Students also voted on the books they want to read for the rest of the school year.

Since that first meeting, the Dixon Lions Club has provided $450 to purchase books.  At the second book club meeting on November 17, free copies of "Wayside School Just Got a Little Stranger" by Louis Sachar were distributed, and the kids were thrilled.

The school and library are also enthusiastic - research indicates the presence of books in the home gives children an enormous advantage academically.

This is a collaborative program between the and the Library.  In addition, the library is very fortunate to have inspired volunteers from the Community Service Club to help with book discussions and activities.

Children / Young Adult Librarian Katrina Bergen has contacted the fifth grade teachers at and , and hopes to begin book clubs at those schools by January, 2012.
