Children's Cake Classes Are a Summer Hit

Fine Motor Skills Developed But Just Part of the Fun

More than a dozen children gather each Wednesday afternoon to develop their fine motor skills. Only thing is, they think they are decorating cupcakes.

"They've been decorating their mom and dad's birthday cakes for several years, now," said Katie Hensen from Sacramento. "They will spend an hour or more decorating and are very intense," she said. Her husband, David Hensen, pick up their grandsons each week in Vacaville and drive them to Janis Luzzo's store, '' where they all enjoy time together before the couple returns the boys to Vacaville and then drive back to Sacramento.

"We believe that the more you give them good activities--even if it's things you do at home, the less likely it is that they will get into trouble," said Katie who boast that she had taken all of Luzzo's cake decorating classes and that's how she knew about the children's programs.

Andrew Peterson, 8, and his brother, Garrett, 6, were busy putting on the finishing touches to their masterpieces that looked very similar to a brown dog face. Dylan Diaz, 8, was busy completing the dog's fur on his cake. Other students at other tables concentrated on finishing touches.

"I book up every single week," said Luzzo. "The chidlren have been signing up two months in advance to make sure they get a spot. I get them started and Megan Paxton assists them in completing their projects."
