Kelsie Aasen Nabs 3rd at FFA Speech Meet

Nine DHS Students Honored With State FFA Degree at Spring North Coast Regional Meet

Dixon High School was the site of this past Friday and Saturday's Future Farmer’s of America North Coast Regional Conference. There are five regions in the state of California with the North Coast region spanning from Crescent City, all the way down the coast including Half Moon Bay and east to Rio Vista. There were approximately 150 FFA students today but there will be an additional 150 participating tomorrow in addition to some parents, said Bill Scott one of the two Dixon FFA Advisors. John Ramos is the other advisor.

Friday there was public speaking competition in which two Dixon FFA students participated. Kelsie Aasen, the FFA President, and Devon Minnema, a ‘greenhand.’ Aasen took third place for her extemporaneous speech chosen out of a hat full of topics 20 minutes before her speech. It was on the subject of “Is FFA too expensive for it’s membership.”

“Membership is $10 per student so it is not too expensive,” she said with a laugh after receiving her certificate. The DHS senior has been involved since her freshman year after her brother’s positive experiences in the organization “heavily influenced” her. Plus, she really enjoyed her Ag teachers, Mr. Ramos and Mr. Scott, she said.

Aasen plans to attend a junior college to study nutrition and then plans to join the U.S. Air Force.

On Saturday, a regional business meeting was conducted and a delegate meeting included working on bylaws and amendments while an Ag teacher meeting was also conducted.

After lunch, there was an awards ceremony that featured nine DHS students receiving ‘State FFA Degrees.’ They were: Ashtin Bechtold, Travis Davidson, Kyle Garlick, Kat Havlin, Hunter Kett, Tori Means, Shannon Myers, Tucker Percival, and TJ Raycraft.

“Only about three percent of the students earn this,” said Scott. “They have to make so much money [from a profitable business venture;] they have to do a lot of activity—some above the chapter levels; serve on various committees; and more,” he said. The degree is considered very prestigious and an honor, he said.

Garrett Rasmussen, another DHS FFA student won the distinguished award of 'Star in Placement.'
