DHS Boys Basketball: Dixon Rams Topple Vacaville in Lopsided Victory

Dixon rolls to easy victory in Buck Bailey tournament.

The Dixon High boys basketball team defeated the Vacaville 75-53 in the second round of the Buck Bailey Tournament Friday night at Woodland High School.

The game sparked a heated, post-game exchange between both Dixon Coach Sam Harrison and a Vacaville assistant coach.

The Rams used Harrison’s “gold defense,” or a double-teaming of players with possession of the ball, to pull out to an early 24-8 lead after one quarter. The Bulldogs cut the lead to just eight points at halftime.

Harrison was a little worried about the Rams’ double-digit lead being trimmed to single digits, but said with the practice his team has been putting in, knew what it was capable of.

“We always work in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter (in practice) and we play so intense that we know that they’re going to make mistakes,” Harrison said. “If they’re not in shape, we’re going to turn the defense into offense, and that’s what we did.”

Dixon would hold Vacaville to just four points in the first seven minutes of the third quarter and pulled away from the Bulldogs in the fourth.

“I told the kids ‘This is you, you got to get your respect. You got to play as a unit. You got to play as five people out there as one,’” Harrison said. “And they showed that they could do that. People have never seen this kind of defense before.”

Bryan Hollowell and Jeffrey Miner each led the Rams with 15 points.

Dixon will play in the third round of the Buck Baily Tournament on Saturday. The Rams improve to 4-2, the Bulldogs are 3-6.
