Should Dixon Break Apart Water Agency?

The Dixon City Council is exploring the future of how water flows in Dixon.

During Tuesday's meeting of the Dixon City Council, the council stopped short on deciding if it should be in the water business on its own.

According to a story in the Vacaville Reporter, the council held its decision until next week to dissolve the Dixon-Solano Water Authority, which is essentially a partnership between the city and Solano Irrigation District, in favor of establishing a city-operated water service.

The council set a special meeting that will further explore the issue on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Dixon customers get their water from either the DSWA OR Cal Water. The economic stability of the partnership between the city and SID has caused ripples of concern among the city council members and much debate.

The Reporter states the DSWA has no money to pay bills or to run the water service. A rate hike is needed in order for the service to continue.

Now we put the question to the readers of Dixon Patch. Should the city dissolve its relationship with SID and run its own water service? Do you see any problems with that? Does the city have the expertise on its staff to pull this off? Will it bring on more costs that may be passed onto ratepayers?
