Obama and Garamendi Ads Driving Guest Editor Crazy

Ads Do the Opposite When Aimed At the Wrong Market

I’ve enjoyed being ‘Guest Editor’ for the Dixon Patch despite that I am still working hard at establishing a new retail shop in downtown Dixon. What I have not enjoyed is opening my Dixon Patch site every single day and staring all day long at President Barack Obama and his lovely wife, Michelle.

It is true I do not agree with just about anything this President says or does but the fact is I can respect that he won a presidential campaign fair and square and therefore deserves to be given the benefit of my doubts. But that is not why I don’t like seeing him on my work page. If he were on my television, I could turn him off. But, he is where I work and I have no choice.

The idea about not being able to campaign in one’s workplace is starting to make sense to me. I try not to look but then there is movement to catch my eye and I must make a deliberate effort to ignore that part of my page.

All I can think of is how much money is being spent on those ads. If we took all that money and built a factory that employs workers who produce something significant—say beepers that help people find their lost keys or cell phones, I wouldn’t be bothered. I would think it was money well spent. But nope, this is money—lots of it (unless he owns America Online)—that is spent trying to convince me to vote for him which would be say—well, a cold day in hell. I most definitely see this as money not well spent. Just how many people’s votes are actually swayed by flashing advertisements on an internet site? Do I really want to sign his birthday card?

I also don’t like the Garamendi ads, either. I believe the man is a career politician that gave up doing good when he first gerrymandered—now that he’s gerrymandered more than once, I don’t think he’s in politics to watch out for anyone but himself. I’ve spoke to the man on a couple occasions and he smelled fake with a capital F within the first 10 seconds. I just don’t like even seeing him in his pretend cowboy hat living on the corner of my screen every day. What in the heck is someone supposed to do with these ads?

While most ads are targeted to get you to do business, these ads are having the opposite affect and are making me crazy.

This is scarcely the beginning of a long campaign season yet I do have a bit of good news. I have figured out one small way of dealing with seeing unwanted politicians where my eyes want to see news, fellow Dixonites, and updates on our local government. I have discovered that if I have two pages open simultaneously, I can cover the half of the page with the square Obama and Garamendi ads with the other document. Remember, this is just my opinion.

You have convinced me to unsubscribe to Dixon Patch.
Joy Truesdell July 18, 2012 at 11:33 am
Gotta respect a person who's not afraid of a negative backlash. It's just kind of shocking to read something that's been so boldly dished. Our television and paper media certainly don't mind giving us their personal opinions but it's ususally done wearing velvet gloves. We have been lulled by that. Being able to say what's on your mind, even when it involves statements that may be personally offensive to some folks, is what free press is about....and, historically, has always been an editor's prerogative.
M. D. July 18, 2012 at 11:52 am
Why would you unsubscribe? Because the writer doesn't like Obama? Half the country doesn't like Obama. Do you only surround yourself with people who agree with you? You can chose what you read and if you no longer want to read The Patch, that is your right but choosing to do so only because someone doesn't agree with your politics is close-minded.
Ron Walker July 18, 2012 at 12:36 pm
I agree with M.D. to a point. Dixon Patch was a refreshing change from most other outlets because it was void of all the political BS and now here we go? What does a political add, from anyone, have to do with Dixon? There are plenty of other sites to go to if you want to slam politicians, leave this one alone, please!

Use Firefox and AdBlock+.
You will never regret it.

Dixon Patch was politically and religiously neutral under the prior Editor. When I bid the former Editor a fond farewell I also noted that I felt the paper would take a certain bent pathway in his absence. It has and I just have to laugh because it was so predictable.
If the current editor continues to inject her right leaning stories and opinions into the mix it will spoil what was an enjoyable read for many. Patty don’t stop reading and commenting. I’d suggest that you rail against any narrow minded views in hopes of creating a better read for all.

I'm sorry but there seems to be some flawed logic aside from the political aspects of this piece. First off those ads do provide jobs. They are probably providing income to some of the recent college grads struggling to find the American dream or unemployed baby boomers who learned a new trade(or improved one, baby boomers are computer savvy too;) They are employing people who can contribute to evolution of how we gain information, perhaps some day outside of a political arena. Also if you do some marketing research relating to online media, I'm sorry to tell you but you've done just what the advertisements have intended. While you maybe not support these campaigns, your unhappiness with them, and your decision to air that grievance on a decently read publication has given them further and free advertisement. You have, in your own words, "done business". Finally due to the ever increasing advancement of technology and the glorious minds at Google, those ads reached you for a reason. If there's one thing we definitely know about online advertising, placement is never wasted.

Well put Gary! You are obviously NOT narrow minded, opinionated or biased!
Gary Erwin July 18, 2012 at 04:04 pm
The point is…should the Editor of a paper post their personal political and religious opinions?
If an Editor of a paper writes with a bias then the creditability of the paper can be placed in question. If a Writer has a bias on a piece then they are often removed from an assignment. Bloggers are known for their skewed views and to some extent that is their draw. I am a blogger and you ought to know by now that my views have a particular slant.
C. Duncan July 18, 2012 at 05:32 pm
Excellent point, Gary. I had the same fears as you, and unfortunately I have noticed the same injection of a certain religious and political bent. We now have the Voice and the Patch, two peas in what appears to be the same pod.... How disappointing. I hope the Patch sees the errors in its ways and makes a change. Then Mrs. DIngman can blog or comment away with her opinions. Too bad we cannot clone Brianna Boyd who does a phenomenal job as editor without injecting her personal beliefs or biases.
D.J Koogler July 18, 2012 at 05:37 pm
I do agree that an editor should be neutral. But I wonder if the slant was to your liking would you complain?
Rose July 18, 2012 at 05:43 pm

1:39 pm on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 Wow!! Pulled lots of chains!! I say lighten up and lets be gracious :) I love the patch. It's always to the point and rarely controversial! Way ta be yourself, Debra!!
Gary Erwin July 18, 2012 at 06:18 pm
I respect neutrality in the press because it affords all an equal view of the goings on in the world and about town.
We really don’t need another religopolitical paper in this town because we already have one. I agree that Brianna does a great job. The Tribune is the cornerstone of our written history for the town. It must remain free of bias. If the Patch wants to be taken seriously it has to dust itself off and try it again.
Trisha Seastrom July 18, 2012 at 06:27 pm
I agree with you, Gary, and shared your parting sentiments to Carlos. What is happening was very predictable and unfortunate for those of us that have really enjoyed the Patch. I don't mind thoughtful debate or disagreement but the fact that perfectly legal ads are "driving [her] crazy" is not a thoughtful argument or even interesting. I hope The Patch is reading and does something. I only see this kind of tone escalating and I am already reading the Patch less and less...
Devon Minnema July 19, 2012 at 01:37 pm
politically neutral? I think what you want Patch to be is exactly what Ron Walker wants Patch to be: devoid of all politics and opinion. Why don't you write a letter to the editor if you have a problem and contribute to the site? The point of editorials are to get THE READERS to write back and not be afraid to write their own editorials or letters to the editor... That's why the Sunday edition of the Vacaville Reporter almost always has a reader editorial at the very top of its opinion section. Feel free to inject your left leaning editorials any time now...
Devon Minnema July 19, 2012 at 01:40 pm
oh don't be so closed minded, Patty! Its just an editorial... If you want, you could always submit a letter to the editor. You have to remember that this is a newspaper just like the Reporter and the Tribune and the Bee and there are going to be multiple points of view represented and not just yours or mine or anyone's. Do you realize how many publications I would have to unsubscribe from if I took personal offense to every editorial that disagreed with my worldview? Every last publication on earth, because they all eventually say something I disagree with (yes, even the libertarian publications disagree with me from time to time).
Devon Minnema July 19, 2012 at 01:52 pm
As I mentioned before, I do not agree 100% with anyone, not even my mom. But Gary, I seem to remember you saying that you:
"sense a certain sugar coating and biasing will soon glaze the site." from this statement, it would appear that you don't want sugar coating of opinions and news. If you didn't want "sugar coating" this kind of editorial should be right up your alley. And you certainly didn't get any bias, as this editorial was clearly marked "OPINION" at the top of this page.
Gary Erwin July 19, 2012 at 03:35 pm
Devon, if your mother’s goal by writing the “opinion” was to disenfranchise readers she has achieved her goal. Anyone other than a Republican or Tea Party member could have been insulted by her writings.
As stated our town has another religopolitical rag in town it would be nice not to have this issue creep into the Patch. In an ideal world the Editor is impartial and falls silent on issues of partisan politics, other than to report it’s incidence. http://www.apme.com/?page=EthicsStatement http://www.chicagotribune.com/chi-ethicscode,0,4040906.story You would do well to read the above links and then contemplate this issue again.
Joe Knows July 26, 2012 at 09:00 am
Way to bully the new editor Gary! This is the Dixon Patch you are reading, not the SFGate.
Gary Erwin July 26, 2012 at 03:48 pm
If you throw a hard ball don't be surprised if it gets returned faster and harder than the original. If it had been a softball most of us would have overlooked it.
We should all expect, strive for and desire an impartial Editor.
Debra Dingman July 26, 2012 at 07:10 pm
Just to remind folks, I was "Guest Editor" and now my assignment is over. I'm too smart to let go of a major investment (such as my children's clothing and toy store) easily. I was encouraged to involve the readership and the discussion of whether or not an Editor can have an opinion (even if it's posted under OPINION") has brought a worthy debate. Maybe I'll turn into a blogger now...
Randy Davis July 27, 2012 at 12:22 am
The Patch is a business. If you don't like the way the business operates, find another outlet for local news and discussion. I got tired of the Sacramento Bee's politics and discontinued my subscription. I would like "news' articles to be unbiased as possible, but I don't have that same expectation regarding opinion columns and editorials.

Didn't O'Reilly's just close on the other side of town? There's a 'for lease' sign on the building.

It is indeed an O'Reilly's Auto Parts, relocating from the Pitt School Road/Market Lane location,Read More per Dixon City Hall.

Great to see the 4th graders getting ready for their 5th grade camp at Alliance Redwoods. I took myRead More 6th graders there for many years and Alliance has an outstanding program that keeps the kids focused on environmental education and stewardship. The night hike through the redwoods was always their favorite (along with the zip line). Note: No need to bring snacks as the dining hall meals has everything you will need, but you may want to bring some extra money for the gift shop. Dan Mattingly/Retired Teacher

Thanks for the post Dean. The Dixon VFW has contributed several thousand dollars so far to bothRead More homes in Dixon and will be contributing a lot more in the future for these Vets. The housing program is managed by the North Bay Coummity Action Council (formerly known as the Fairfield/Suisun CAC). The Vets are very grateful for all the community support. One project we are trying to get funding or donations for is we need approximately 50 cubic yards ofRead More top soil to even out the back and side yards and bring them up even with the patio in the back.

Hi Dean. Come to the next VFW meeting. I'm sure the members will support this. You might want toRead More get an estimate from Dixon Landscape Materials for a fill dirt load.
