New Solano County Sheriff-Coroner Thomas Ferrara Takes Oath of Office Today

Reception is slated for 2:30 p.m., at Solano County Events Center at 601 Texas St. in Fairfield.

Thomas Anthony Ferrara will become Solano County's 27th sheriff-coroner when he takes the oath of office in Fairfield this afternoon.

Ferrara, who was appointed undersheriff on Dec. 31, 2006, was selected by the Solano County Board of Supervisors in August to fill the remaining two years of Sheriff Gary Stanton's term.

Stanton retired Oct. 31 after 40 years with the sheriff's office.

Ferrara began his law enforcement career in 1978 as a cadet with the Rio Vista Police Department and later became a reserve officer.

He became a full-time police officer with the Isleton Police Department in 1983 and was hired as a Solano County deputy sheriff in December 1984.

Ferrara has worked in the sheriff's office's patrol, investigations and civil divisions.

He became a deputy sergeant in 1995 and returned to patrol. In 1998 he was transferred to the Court Services Bureau in Vallejo where he assisted in the merger of the Vallejo Marshal's Office and the Solano County Sheriff's Office.

Ferrara was promoted to Chief Deputy and Public Safety Commander in February 1999. He became a captain in 2002 and was division commander of the Custody Division until December 2006 when he became Solano County Undersheriff.

Ferrara lives in Vacaville with his wife Julee and sons Nicholas and Holden.

There will be a reception after the administration of the oath of office at 2:30 p.m. at the Solano County Events Center at 601 Texas St. in Fairfield.

Congratulations Tom! Frankly, I always thought you smiled too much to be a cop, but what do I know. Our interactions were always positive and you know I was a big fan of Gary's. Congratulations on the new appointment and I look forward to working with you in the future.
