Atkins announced his decision to not seek further employment as librarian during last week's meeting of the library board. Today, he confirmed that he is planning to retire.

"Yes, I am retiring," he said. "My contract expires on June 1, so my last day will be June 1."

Atkins declined to talk about the details of his retirement until he is able to talk to the library commission on Monday and discuss specific details of his departure, he said.

"I have to discuss it offcially with the people that I work for before I say too much," Atkins said.

Dixon Public Library trustee Joe DiPoala said that he has put an item on the March 8 meeting of the library board to recommend that the board begin an area-wide search for a new district librarian.

The board could also choose to put someone in the librarian's position on an interim basis until a candidate can be hired.
