Dixon City Council to Take Steps to Curb the Use of Alcohol, Tobacco and other Harmful Drugs

Tonight the council is expected to adopt a resolution that will create a partnership with Solano County and implement programs to curb the use of tobacco, alcohol and other harmful drugs in Dixon

The Dixon City Council is expected to take some steps to curb the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among the community during tonight’s meeting of the city council.

The council will have a resolution in front of them that authorizes Dixon’s mayor or city manager to enter into a contract with Solano County that aims to reduce the use of the aforementioned products within the city through grant funding received from the county.

The funding for the campaign comes from a Master Settlement Agreement awarded to Solano County that was generated by a state lawsuit against tobacco companies. The funds were awarded to various counties throughout the state to help them implement programs to reduce and discourage the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs according to a City of Dixon staff report.

Under the contract, which lasts a year, the City of Dixon will receive $77,744. The money could be used to establish the following programs

  • Solano Friday Night Live Program – a program that puts youths in leadership positions and challenges them be active in their communities and schools
  • Project Aspire – a program that provides students educational enrichment and recreational opportunities
  • Parent Project – a program that teaches parents with strong-willed or out-of-school children prevention, identification and intervention strategies for the most destructive behaviors such as gang involvement or alcohol abuse.

In other council action, the Dixon City Council is expected to adopt a resolution accepting a bid by D.A. Wood Construction, out of Modesto, of $419,990, for the Core Area Drainage Rehabilitation Project, authorize the city manager to enter into a construction agreement with D.A. Wood and establish a project construction budget of $555,387.

The project encompasses the reconstruction and realignment of the Basin C storm drain mainline between North First Street and Creekside Pond. The project will replace existing 36 inch and 42 inch storm drain pipe with 48 inch and 54 inch pipes to provide additional flood protection within the basin, according to a staff report.

Tonight the council will also hear from City Finance Director Jeremy Craig about the state of Redevelopment Agencies in California as well as from Dixon Fire Chief Aaron McAlister about the locations of fireworks stands in Dixon.
