Dixon City Council Approves Valley Glen Apartment Allotments (Poll Inside)

The Dixon City Council approved 59 residential allotments Tuesday night at its regular meeting

On Tuesday night the Dixon City Council voted 3-2 in favor of allocating 59 residential allotments to Richland Communities for the Valley Glen Apartments Project.

Council members Thom Bogue and Michael Ceremello opposed the allotments, citing concern about increased traffic and crime that might be generated by building these "low income" units in one cluster.

"A lot of people in the community advocate dispersing the housing complexes throughout the town instead of lumping them together because you see the consequences of doing that in many of the towns you travel though now," said Bogue.

"There are traffic implications here that probably weren’t discussed in 2002, and on that basis I would resist allocating the 59 residential allotments just simply because I don’t want to add to an existing problem," said Ceremello.

Members of the community also had a chance to speak out about the new housing.

"I moved to Dixon because of Dixon’s home town feel three years ago," said Walt Balas. "Taking a neighborhood where you have a wonderful hodge-podge of big homes, small homes, older homes, and then sprinkling it with all kinds of affordable housing has not been good planning. Sure we want growth, but the citizens want to preserve old town, and I’m one of them."

Other items approved by the council on Tuesday was a propsal to designate Oct. 9th-15th as “Fire Prevention Week”, which passed unimously 5-0.

Dixon accepted a bid by Del Rio Financial to refinance the city’s debt, voting 5-0 in favor.

Dixon also accepted a bid by Emcor Services/Mesa Energy Systems for heating, ventialation, and air conditioning services (5-0).
