Five photovoltaic solar systems installed throughout Dixon could save the city more than $1.1 million in energy costs over the next 25 years.
More than 1,100 modules installed on shade structures located at City Hall, the Fire Department, Police Department and the Aquatic Center and Dixon Senior/Multi-Use Center at Hall Park began generating solar energy to city facilities in August, according to the city’s web site.
The $2.3 million solar energy project was financed through First Northern Bank and designed by Colorado-based Real Goods Solar, Inc.
City Councilmembers approved the project in October.
Janet Koster, an engineering department senior management analyst, told the council at the time that the solar panels would generate 90 percent of the buildings’ energy needs.
The photovoltaic systems have a lifespan of about 25 years.
