Streets Around Pepperbelly's Reopened Post-Blaze

The Original Pepperbelly's Comedy & Variety Theater, at 849 Texas St., suffered significant damage in the Friday evening fire.

Bay City News

Fire and city crews by Sunday had cleared enough debris from a Fairfield comedy club to reopen area streets following a five-alarm fire.

Surrounding streets had been closed since the blaze, reported Friday at The Original Pepperbelly's Comedy & Variety Theater, 849 Texas St.

The club appeared to be totaled in the fire, Battalion Chief Bob Stoffel said.

The fire department worked with a structural engineer, the city's chief building inspector and a contractor to remove debris and determine the safety of the building, Stoffel said.

Texas Street remained closed for much of Saturday until the area was rendered safe.

The fire in the two-story building, which dates to the 1960s, was shooting flames through the roof and some 45 feet into the air when firefighters arrived at the scene, Stoffel said.

It was brought under control at about 10:15 p.m., and all occupants escaped without injury.

No damage estimate was available Saturday.

The investigation into the fire's cause will continue Monday, Stoffel said.

it's funny that they say the building was built in the 60's ... I remember going to it when I was 4 and 5 ... and that was in the late 40's.

The owner of the club was acting suspicious during the interview by the television news crew.

"Fairfield's first movie theater, which opened in 1921, was at the location of Pepperbelly's. It was refurbished in 1945 as the Solano Theater and in 1974, it changed its name to Fairfield Cinema 1. After the movie theater closed in the 1990s, it was closed until it reopening as a comedy club and has since been run by multiple operators."

Didn't O'Reilly's just close on the other side of town? There's a 'for lease' sign on the building.

Great to see the 4th graders getting ready for their 5th grade camp at Alliance Redwoods. I took myRead More 6th graders there for many years and Alliance has an outstanding program that keeps the kids focused on environmental education and stewardship. The night hike through the redwoods was always their favorite (along with the zip line). Note: No need to bring snacks as the dining hall meals has everything you will need, but you may want to bring some extra money for the gift shop. Dan Mattingly/Retired Teacher

Thanks for the post Dean. The Dixon VFW has contributed several thousand dollars so far to bothRead More homes in Dixon and will be contributing a lot more in the future for these Vets. The housing program is managed by the North Bay Coummity Action Council (formerly known as the Fairfield/Suisun CAC). The Vets are very grateful for all the community support.
