Plans Underway for a 9/11 Memorial in Dixon

With a piece of steel from the remains of the World Trade Center in Dixon, the Dixon Fire Department is working on plans for a 9/11 memorial in front of the department

The attacks on the World Trade Center were a horrific moment in American history. Now, plans are underway in Dixon to create a local 9/11 memorial.

About a month ago, the department received a piece of steel from the remains of the World Trade Center said Dixon Fire Division Chief Ron Karlen.

The has a goal of having the plans ready by Aug. 1, with a subsequent goal of having the memorial complete on the 10-year anniversary of the attacks.

The piece of steel - nicknamed - is currently being housed in a bookshelf along with other important fire department memorabilia. The twisted piece of steel will be the centerpiece of the 9/11 memorial in Dixon. 

The arrival of I-0094 was made possible by an arrangement between the Dixon Fire Department, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Port Authority. Back in April, the Dixon City Council voted on a resolution making the transfer of the piece of steel possible.

The arrangement called for the to pay for the costs of transporting the steel from New York to Dixon. In addition, the City of Dixon had to agree to follow a court order mandating that the city permits any litigants to inspect or test the steel upon 10 day notice to the recipient.

The steel measures 24 inches long, two inches wide and three inches high. Dixon Patch will provide coverage of this important event in Dixon.
