Hundreds of middle and high school students will be admitted free to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom's annual Holiday in the Park Thursday in honor of slain Vallejo police officer James Capoot.

Capoot, 45, of Vacaville, was fatally shot while chasing a bank robbery suspect on Nov. 17. He was a Vallejo police officer for 19 years.

In addition to the 650 students who will be admitted free, complimentary admission has been extended to members of the Vallejo High School girls' basketball team that Capoot once coached to a championship title.

Vallejo police officers and staff also will receive complimentary admission by showing their badge or identification at the ticket entry.

The Vallejo police department's family and friends also will receive a special discounted admission.

Anyone who donates a can of food at the park Thursday will also receive a discount coupon, and a portion of every ticket purchased will be donated to the James Capoot Memorial Fund established by the Vallejo Police Officers Association for Capoot's wife and three children.

Park guests can also make a donation to the trust fund at a special booth in the park's main plaza.

A special tree lighting ceremony to honor Capoot and Vallejo police officers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Thursday.

Kaetzel said Capoot patrolled Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on occasion.

The Holiday in the Park celebration includes holiday shows and attractions, holiday-themed areas and Blitzen's Wonderland Mountain snow hill.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is open daily through Jan. 1 and is closed Dec. 24 and 25.
