Flames Scorch 45 Acres of Wheat

The Dixon Fire Department responded to a wheat field fire over the weekend that resulted in the burning of 45 acres of wheat.

The has its hand full over the weekend with a wheat field fire.

The fire broke out around 5:14 p.m., Saturday, at a wheat field along the intersection of Weber and Pitt School roads. Dixon Fire Chief Aaron McAlister said that workers were harvesting wheat at the time of the fire.

Once firefighters arrived on scene, it took them about 30 minutes to bring it under control, McAlister said. Flames scorched 45 acres of vegetation; no injuries were reported.

McAlister attributed the cause of the fire to the equipment used during the harvesting process.

McAlister said the high temperatures, low humidity; dry grass (which make for dry fuels for fires to feed on) contribute to the threat of fires in Dixon and throughout the county.

The weather is expected to climb to 98 degrees today prompting fire officials to raise the fire danger level in Solano County to high today.
