Fatal Plane Crash Near I-505 Outside Winters

"Witnesses saw pieces of the plane falling from sky," according to CHP.

A plane crashed near Interstate 505 outside Winters Wednesday evening, killing the pilot, according to authorities.

The plane crash-landed near Wolfskill Road, prompting fire crews to respond.

The Vacaville Reporter reports that debris is "spread over a half-mile swath" of land. Witnesses said they believe a wing fell off mid-flight, causing the plane to crash.

"Plane believed to be headed from yolo air port," Tweeted Catherine Bowen. "Witnesses saw pieces of the plane falling from sky."

Dixon Fire, Solano Sheriff and CHP are on the scene, according to Joel Rosenbaum of the Vacaville Reporter, who is tweeting photos from the scene

Here's an additional news report from Bay City News:

The pilot of an experimental aircraft was reportedly killed when the plane went down near Winters this afternoon, authorities said.

The small plane, an Avions Fairey Tipsy Nipper T-66, crashed around 4:15 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

It crashed near northbound Interstate Highway 505 just north of Wolfskill Road, CHP Officer Chris Parker said.

One person was killed in the crash, likely the pilot, and was pronounced dead at the scene, Solano County Sheriff's Lt. Brad DeWall said.

He said that investigators are looking to see if anyone else was on board the aircraft, but suspect that there were not.

The CHP said that the wing reportedly came off the plane.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, and the NTSB is the lead agency, Gregor said.

Brian did a great job getting this photo before most of the other major news outlets arrived on scene

Good photo Brian. it could have been a little closer, maybe a tad crisper and a hair clearer, with a slightly different setting to capture more light, but Hey, you can only ask so much of an older camera phone.
