Fairfield Man Exchanges Gunfire with Police

A domestic violence standoff involving gunfire ended with the arrest of a Fairfield resident

Fairfield police exchanged gunfire with a man who locked himself in the bathroom of his girlfriend's North Texas Street apartment late Sunday night.

The unidentified suspect, who eventually surrendered, suffered injuries that are not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital, Lt. Greg Hurlbut said. No one else was hurt.

The incident began around 11:15 p.m. Sunday when a caller told police their daughter had been assaulted by her boyfriend in Vallejo and that the boyfriend now might be hiding in her apartment in the 2900 block of North Texas Street, Hurlbut said.

When police went to the apartment, the girlfriend told them her boyfriend was dangerous and that there had been several previous incidents of domestic violence. She said her boyfriend had threatened her with a handgun on another occasion, Hurlbut said.

The girlfriend asked police to check her apartment because she was afraid her boyfriend was hiding inside, Hurlbut said. The girlfriend also told police her boyfriend had made suicidal statements, Hurlbut said.

Two officers searched the apartment and found that the bathroom door was locked, then called for additional officers, Hurlbut said.

When backup arrived, police called out several times for anyone inside the locked bathroom to surrender, Hurlbut said. When no one responded after several minutes, the officers forced the door open.

The person inside fired at the officers, and police fired back and yelled for him to surrender, Hurlbut said.

More officers responded, blocked off the area around the apartment complex and evacuated residents from nearby units, Hurlbut said.

The suspect in the bathroom surrendered more than an hour later and was arrested for attempted murder of a police officer, Hurlbut said. He had apparently been armed and waiting for his girlfriend to get home, the lieutenant said.

Fairfield police and the Solano County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.
