One of the nicest things about living in Dixon is that there are plenty of family-friendly events here. Grillin' and Chillin' is such an event.
Now in its third year, Grillin and Chillin’ drew dozens of food vendors who sold everything from ribs to teriyaki noodle bowls to the thousands of people who congregated in Downtown Dixon for the rib and chili cook-off.
While hungry Dixonites – and several from the surrounding cities of Davis, Vacaville and Fairfield – sampled some of the region’s best barbecue, they had an opportunity to gaze at the hundreds of cool cars that comprised this year’s car show. The cool cars however, did nothing to provide relief from the 108-degree weather (according to wunderground.com). On our way to Grillin' and Chillin', we saw several of the classic rides leaving.
Not so strange with temperatures, I can only imagine what heat like that does to the beautiful paint of a classic car like the ones we saw Saturday.
Many people dressed in tank tops soon decided to pay a visit to the vendor selling sun hats. Others strolled through Downtown Dixon, which was closed off for the event, grasping Asian-style umbrellas trying to shade themselves from the sun. A lot of the classic car owners were sitting in the shade, if they could find some.
Like the title says and because of this heat, most people there where grillin' themselves as well with not much chillin' to be done--except for therelief brought by cold beverages served at Dawson's and Bud's and several outside mobile beer stands.
Security tried to stop several people from leaving the Dawson's patio. But with this heat it was hard to stop people from walking around with a cold beer or lemonade and some ribs in hand.
Bob of Cooky's BBQ and Ribs, who I declared my personal winner last year, decided not to enter this year, his ribs were still the best I tasted. Personally I always enjoy eating, I mean sampling, ribs. But, Bob’s ribs are still the best.
Maybe I will find a new winner next year. If you didn't come out this year, mark you calendar for next year as a Dixonite you really should not miss Grillin' and Chillin' 2013.
Did your experience match Berry’s? Who won the rib, chili cook-off in your opinion? How did you get relief from the heat at the event this year?
