Caregiver Support and Education Group

March 13, 2014. STERLING, IL.-According to the Pew Research Center, 39% of all U.S. adults care for someone with significant health issues, which is up from 30% in 2010.  However, the majority of caregiving is done by family members, according to the Caregiver Action Network in Washington, D.C. For some, it is second nature to care for others; most, however, are unaware of the physical and mental toll caregiving can cause.  Whether caring for someone full-or part-time, there are stresses that arise.  Fortunately, support is available from Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI). LSSI has a Caregiver Support and Education Group, which meets the second and fourth Thursday of every month, at noon at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sterling. The group is facilitated by Emily Taylor of LSSI. Taylor says, “You often give up your own needs to care for someone else, and that is what so many do. That is the first difficult hurdle, to get them to recognize that they are a caregiver. When they are dealing with dementia, or any illness, there are many issues to handle.” What makes the Sterling group different and relevant, is that Taylor strives to help each member problem-solve, “rather than just vent”, in support groups.
