Bring LucasFilm to Solano County!

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

The headlines should read "LucasFilm Building in Solano County."

As you may already know, LucasFilm pulled their plans to build in Marin County after homeowners there refused to cooperate with them.  Since then a number of other counties have begun pursuing the studio hoping to bring their business to them.  Solano should be the top contender and a new grouping of local residents agree.

We've just launched a Facebook and change.org petition campaign to garner support. We, the people behind 'Bring LucasFilm to Solano County', are hoping to enlist, neigh, inspire local media and newspapers to join in the effort to make this rare opportunity a reality for Solano County.

Thousands of jobs will be created as a result of the economic boon by having a hollywood studio in our backyard.

But we're not alone.  Many other counties have already begun pursuing the studio giving us stiff competition.  Would you please consider raising awareness by running a story and questioning county leaders about this opportunity?

Sincerely,
Joshua Cook, Founder, Bring LucasFilm to Solano County

Do not be fooled this has nothing to do with Dixon...this is all about Vallejo and Mare Island wanting the studio as seen in the following quote. "a petition on change.org has collected 720 signatures as of April 24, suggesting Mare Island in Vallejo as the best place for the project". Your energy is best spent supporting your local Elected Officials, City Staff and the Mayor.

You deserve support on this Josh. Dixon needs to be ready for opportunities such as this. Infrastructure measures such as water, roads, sewer, etc need to be well planned and in place. We can't fight over things like our sewer system and school funding, vote them both down, get nothing done, and then expect a big concern to just step in and embrace this community. If we can get Lucas to come to Dixon, fantastic! If not Dixon, then absolutely Solano County. We are citizens of the county too, and it would be great to have an employer like Lucas films in our county, and within a reasonable commute from here.

Dixon is ready for this. Tell me how it is not or why Vallejo would be a better location? They are currently doing production work in Vancouver B.C. so the distance between the "Ranch" and Dixon is not that great. Dixon has a ready to build site and Mare Island has a lot of needed clean up.

Perhaps it's time for our city leaders to take a step to show the LucasFilm that Dixon is the best place to build their project? The City of Fairfield drafted an equivalent to a love letter to them. The people of Vallejo have made a Facebook page to get Lucas to take notice of Mare Island. What have the people of Dixon done, so far, to lure LucasFilm to Ramtown?

I believe that Lucasfilm is way ahead of us already. In my reading about the future studio they are already talking to the towns they are interested in and they have already said no to others. I think it is time for Carlos to put on investigative goggles and gumshoes on and look into this and give us the big scoop....

In an e-mail sent to me from Lucasfilm dated, Wed 5/9/2012 "We currently have several promising opportunities under consideration. Because of this, we are not pursuing any new sites or locations at this time". We know that Dixon had been contacted prior to this date. So...in my mind all of the web sites and Facebook bru ha-ha is a wasted effort. Hence my point that we need to support our City Officials and elected officials. We might find that they have already selected the new site but that they are in a “due diligence period” with the City of choice. This period gives time for the potential owner to review the EIR and do any additional studies prior to signing the deal. During this period it is often the case that neither party will comment about the deal so that if they have a change of mind it can be done with minimal impact on the parties involved.

I have sent an email to Lucas Films and requested that they contact us in Dixon and touting the benefits of locating here. The response was that they were too far along in the project to consider opening a new facility to keep on schedule. I have replied to them but my interaction has been with the publicity department. If there is another more direct contact to Lucas or the directors/managers I would like to have that and I would again make contact and urge them to consider Dixon. I even mentioned Altec and the ease with which we made it possible for them to develop their facility. Any help is appreciated and it would be very good for Dixon to realize development of this nature.

Dane, The only missing component to this campaing is a letter to George Lucas/Lucasfilm from the Mayor, City Manager and all of the Council Members.

Good job Dane! We need to look at the opportunities out there. Time spent talking to great companies and great employers is time well spent in my opinion.

I found this detailed description of the proposed Marin Facility that might interest some readers. The plan called for a 270,000-square-foot digital production studio in the hills near Lucas Valley Road, including offices, a restaurant for employees, a retail store, a wine tasting room, screening rooms and storage. There would have also been 20 employee guest suites, a parking garage and an outdoor stage. The Highway 80 exposure is perfect for his store and wine tasting room. I can see all of the other components working well on the proposed site as well. I'd suggest an organic vineyard on the undeveloped land.

Really????????????????? There is not a single person on the facebook page or on this site that is from Vallejo or promoting Mare Island, this looks more like a Solano East promotion. I think any place in Solano Co would benefit the entire county. I of course would rather it be at Mare Island since I live in Vallejo and see the value of three major highways converging at one point for commuters... Once you get East into Solano Co it gets a bit removed from the Bay Area
Gary Erwin May 23, 2012 at 03:26 PM
They are currently shooting in Vancouver, Dixon is much closer than Vancouver. They want a retail outlet onsite.... Highway 80 has a strong flow of traffic all week long that would supply an endless stream of buyers/visitors. Think about the fact that there is no pollution, toxic chemicals or historic buildings to deal with. They are already in talks with the towns they are interested in.
