10 Years of Iraq War Casualties: Dixon Remembers Shawn Galen Adams

It's been 10 years since the start of the Iraq War. Dixon lost one of its own in the War.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003 -- and although officially "over," the fighting continues.

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

CNN has a stunning map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. Among them, a soldiers from Dixon: 

  • Shawn Galen Adams, 21. Died of wounds suffered when a homemade bomb exploded in the village of Owesat near Yusufiya, Iraq, on July 22, 2007.

Two Vacaville soldiers also lost their lives: 

  • Jerry Lee Bonifacio Jr, 28. Killed when a car bomb detonated near his checkpoint in Baghdad, Iraq.
  • Casey Sheehan, 24. One of eight soldiers killed when their unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in the Sadr City area of Baghdad, Iraq.
