Book Review- Coldest Girl In Coldtown

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black
publisher: Little Brown
released: September 3, 2013
hardcover, 419 pages
intended audience: Young adult
rating: ♥♥♥♥

In the age of the wake of vampires, the world has completely adapted. Reality shows flood the television with the glamour and the horrors of vampire life, teaching humans to always carry rose water and garlic to defend themselves, as well as never ever go out after dark. While those that are infected, are locked away in barricaded “Coldtowns”, designed to keep the vampires in and the humans out. Even with all the borders and security warnings, they still can’t keep willing humans from coming in, which keeps them the life supply as well as the prey for the vampires within.

Tana doesn’t want anything to do with any of it. From the time as a child when she was bitten by her infected mother, she has separated herself from the lure and the fantasy behind the vampires. However, when she wakes up in a bathtub covered in blood, at a teen shut- in party, with a vampire chained on the next room, her life suddenly becomes known as the legendary teen who survived the attack. Being the only survivor not infected, Tana must react quickly if she wants to remain human. In an instant she makes a life altering decision, throwing the chained vampire and her infected ex-boyfriend in the car and fleeing. An act of mercy, she will soon regret.

Now with Coldtown being her only refuge, surviving behind the bordered walls is her only choice. However, Coldtown wasn’t what she expected, the fancy ballrooms and the glittering lights were only part of TV 's  allure. Instead, Coldtown is a place time forgot, with beggars in the street and dangers that lurk in every shadow. Survival of humankind is the top priority, as is the survival of the vampire line.

Tana's rebirth is not from becoming one of theirs, it’s a rebirth of who she is. No longer defined by the friendships she had on the outside, Tana must decide for herself who she really is.  Through the help of friends, in the unlikeliness of places, she finds help and refuge, as well as strength of character that she never knew she possessed.

Leaving Tana to fight, kill and defend all that she now cherishes. Yet her biggest challenge of all might just be deciding who she cherishes most. For the saved vampire, Gavriel proves to be more than just challenging, but one of desire. Yielding, that one act of mercy deserves another.

Holy Black gives depth and character to this book, without even having to delve into the first few lines of the book. Highlighting a promise of what's to come within the first few lines of her acknowledgement, by stating, "This book is a love letter to all the vampire books I have read over and over growing up."

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, is just that. The beautiful compilation of inspiration from vampire books of the past, mixed with pure imagination and love.
