Where to Go to Participate in 9/11 Memorial Events

The county will have several 9/11 Memorial Events, here is your guide on where to go locally to take part in these events.

The events of 9/11 shocked the nation and continue to . The gravity of the event, on its 10-year anniversary, has not been lost on cities throughout Solano County. Several cities throughout the county, from Dixon to Benicia, will host 9/11 Memorial Events for residents to reflect on the day and what it meant for our nation. 

Dixon

Dixon's 9/11 Memorial Event will be highlighted by I-0094, the name of the piece of steel that the received from the remains of the World Trade Center.

Recently, the Dixon City Council gave the department its approval to construct a 9/11 Memorial in front of the fire department that will feature the piece of steel and will serve as a local place where Dixonites can reflect on 9/11.

Dixon's 9/11 Memorial event is set for 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Dixon Fire Department, 205 Ford Way. The Dixon Fire Department will unveil its memorial at this time and guest speakers include a retired New York City Firefighter who now calls Dixon his home.

Suisun City

The Suisun City Fire Department recently received steel beams from the remains of the World Trade Center and have fashioned them into a 9/11 memorial.

Suisun firefighters have constructed a memorial from two 10-foot metal beams taken from the remains of the World Trade Center and will unveil it during a Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11, 12:30 p.m., at Harbor Plaza, downtown Suisun City, at the corner of Solano and Main Street. This event is expected to last an hour.

Fairfield

The City of Fairfield is gearing up for its 9/11 Commemorative Open House Sunday, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11.

This event gives the opportunity for everyone to come to the Fairfield Civic Center to talk to firefighters and police officers. Residents can get a first-hand glimpse of fire trucks, emergency rescue vehicles and see equipment demonstrations from multiple organizations. Local dive team members will be on hand, as well as Fairfield PD's SWAT Units and the Posse on horseback.

This is a family event that includes a bake sale and silent auction - proceeds to go to the New York Police and Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund.

Sponsored by Solano County fire and law enforcement agencies, the open house will be held at the City of Fairfield Civic Center, Civic Center Drive

Benicia

The Benicia Fire Department will go through great lengths to memorialize their fallen brothers who lost their lives on 9/11. Benicia’s City Park will be flush with flags in memory of the NYC firefighters who died during 9/11.

Throughout the day, the firefighters will be at City Park, setting up 343 miniature flags for the firefighters who died on 9/11. Benicia residents will also have the opportunity to make a donation to the FDNY Widows and Orphans Fund.

Vacaville

The Vacaville Fire and Police Departments will be holding a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on the front steps of the Vacaville Police Department, 660 Merchant St., as a way to honor everyone who died on that day.

The Memorial Ceremony kicks off at 8:45 a.m., the Pacific Time when the first plane is said to have struck the World Trade Center, on Sunday, Sept. 11.

This special event will feature the singing of the National Anthem, a last-alarm bell ringing ceremony and a variety of speakers from the Vacaville Fire and Police Departments.
