Tractor Collision Causes Overturned Trailer to Spill Load of Sand

A tractor loaded with hot asphalt collided with a trailer that was carrying a full load of sand Wednesday morning. The accident happened on County Road 27, near County Road 93, north of Dixon and west of Davis.

The sand-loaded trailer was being piloted by Ricardo Becerra Orosco, of Dixon. The accident caused his trailer to overturn, spilling the sand on the roadway.

According to the California Highway Patrol:

Juan Ayala Tafolla, a 59-year-old male from Woodland was driving a 2008 Kenworth tractor/trailer combination that was fully loaded with hot asphalt. Tafolla was traveling on westbound CR-27, approaching the T-Intersection with CR-93.

Ricardo Becerra Orosco, a 53-year-old male from Dixon was driving a 2008 Peterbuilt tractor/trailer combination that was fully load with sand.  Orosco was traveling southbound on CR-93, approaching the T-Intersection with CR-27.

Orosco stopped at the intersection and was preparing to turn left.  Orosco observed the Kenworth approaching the intersection and believed that it was going to turn right, so began his left turn.

Tafolla was approaching the intersection and was going to proceed straight, when he observed the Peterbuilt start to turn left.  Tafolla attempted to avoid a traffic collision by veering to the left, while Orosco stopped his left turn and attempted to enter a dirt roadway directly in front of him. The driving maneuvers of the two vehicles caused the Kenworth to collide with the rear trailer of the Peterbuilt.

The impact caused the rear trailer of the Peterbuilt to overturn, spilling sand.  The Kenworth went out of control to the right, running off the north edge of CR-27 where it spilled asphalt.  All the spilled material was contained on the roadway. The traffic collision caused moderate damage to the involved vehicles and Tafolla suffered complaints of pain.  Tafolla was transported to U.C. Davis Medical Center for treatment. The intersection of CR-27 at CR-93 was closed for approximately 3 hours for clean up.
