Welcome to Moms Talk, a feature here on Dixon Patch dedicated to reaching moms and families. We invite you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support here in Dixon. Additionally, you will have opportunity to ask questions or offer answers on issues and hot topics that concern you.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from your Moms Council:

I have an 15-month old and I am thinking I want to start potty training him now. My mom said this is too early but I think he is really ready to do it. Besides I have a couple of friends that have already started their children on training and they are about the same age.

My answer: Studies show that your child usually develops the ability to use elimination muscles at about 18 months, and is usually capable of being completely potty trained at 2 years. It doesn’t mean that you son will not be able to be trained, but you don’t want to try to pressure on your child. As important as their motor and cognitive ability is how he/she feels emotionally. Many times a child might hint to you that he/she is ready to learn by taking of a soiled diaper or imitating going to the bathroom. Still, even when a child learns how to go by themselves, they may go back to going on themselves. It takes a lot of patience in most cases, so don’t expect it to happen over night.
