Lambtown Knitters Give Chase to World Knitting Record

300 knitters participate in an attempt to break world record for most people knitting in one place

On Oct. 1, 2011, Lambtown USA celebrated its 25th year anniversary holding festivities at the . The festival centered around the sheep industry. But while most of the events centered on sheep shearing, spinning, knitting, cooking, eating, animal showing, there was one at play wordly implications.

This year, Lambtown took its first attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for most people knitting in one location.

The current world record is 1147 people, set on April 30 by a group of knitters in Roscommon, Ireland.  Participants registered in front of the stadium and filed onto the bleachers wielding their needles and yarn.

The group was given 15 minutes to knit without stopping in order to break the record, but unfortunately, the group fell short of the record with just under 300 registered knitters coming out and participating.

Squares completed in the 15 minutes were donated to Project Linus who will then knit them together to create blankets for children in need in Solano County. Since November 2008, Project Linus Solano has circulated over 2,500 blankets county-wide.

Though the record was not broken, the crowd was in good spirits and were electrified from the beginning by a run-away piglet from the petting zoo who escaped and ran into the stadium, darting back and forth and evading his owners.  After minutes of entertaining the crowd and giving leading pursuer,  Ashley Murray a serious work out, the piglet was finally cornered and caught.

“He got out when one of the kids was holding him,” said Murray. “He took off down the strip and I chased him all the way into the stadium, and of course there was an event going on there at the time.”

After returning the piglet to the petting zoo, Murray was repeatedly asked for the piglet’s name. “After that, I’m calling him Speedy,” said Murray.

Lambtown anticipates more people will come and participate next year when they make the second attempt of breaking the world record. Check out the attached video of some of this year's knitting action at Lambtown USA.
