Forty Years After Its Closing, The Giant Orange Remains a Dixon Icon

The Giant Orange Hamburger stand recounts 40 years since it's last closing in 1973.

Forty years ago, Giant Orange Hamburgers closed its last window, after more than 50 years in business. The Dixon location, was the last to close for the company, on July 15, 1973, until it was later reopened as George's Orange by new owners.

According to the Giant Orange's Facebook, founders Frank and Lora Pohl began opening their 16 stands back in the 1920's along Highway 99, and spread rumor that a stand could easily go through six thousand oranges during a week as it quenched the thirst of weary travelers who pulled over for a quick drink.

The Giant Orange Hamburgers posted a nostalgic photo on their Facebook page today, and reader's shared their memories.

Jennifer Leal recounted her experience with the Dixon location, "My first job was George's Orange in Dixon. Dixon Ave & I-80 great people best food ever!! Loved the fresh squeeze Orange Juice."

While, Velma Hill Arenas commented, "I remember when me and my sisters rode our bikes to George's Orange and had ice-cream cones and we had just pocket change good times."

Giant Orange Hamburgers has a brand new location in Sacramento, at 1407 Howe Avenue (between Hallmark Drive and Hurley Way). Although it does not currently have a giant orange stand out front, the owners Rick Ameil and Dean Talbott are on a mission to find and restore one to display.

What memories do you have of the Giant Orange that now sits near the corner of A Street & I-80?
