Dixon Rugby Holds Second Free Mini-Camp this Weekend

The Dixon Rugby Football Club will hold its second free weekend mini-camp this Saturday and Sunday, December 14th and 15th, at Hall Park from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. There is no cost, no obligation to play, and no experience required to attend. The camp will introduce the sport to those who have never played before and will be a refresher for the returning players. It is open to boys and girls from the 5th through 12th grades.

Since their inception in 2007, with one Middle School team, the Dixon Club has seen explosive growth, now with seven teams, including: one Under 12, two Middle School, two Boys Junior Varsity, two Boys Varsity and one Girls Varsity teams. The Club has been ranked as one of the Top 10 High School Boys Varsity Teams in the country for the last three years, winning a National Championship in the 2012. The Club has also produced seven High School All-Americans since 2011, including one girl. Equally as important is that Dixon Club has over an 80% college participation rate from its graduating seniors in the last three years, at both two and four year colleges.

The official rugby season begins January 6th, however, the Club is in full swing with the high school players running in Pena Adobe Park in Vacaville three times a week, on a 3.5 mile grueling run, which they call “The Ridge”.

“The Ridge is not for the faint of heart,” said Head Junior Varsity Coach, Greg Bonovich, with a smile. “It’s a great run for the kids, especially the backside where we do a little sprint work.” The coaches also run with the players and it is an excellent team building experience. The freshman class appears to be leading the charge this year with most of the front runners coming from the class of 2017.

This upcoming season, in addition to full Conference Schedules for all the Teams, there will be a decidedly international flavor, with the Club hosting three touring teams coming in from Australia and one from Canada. Last year the Club hosted a Club from Australia and one from New Zealand. This year the entire Club will also take its traditional three day tour to San Lois Obispo in January, the Boys Varsity Team will take their annual Spring Tour, this year to Washington DC and Virginia, and the Girls Varsity will tour again in Southern California.

All new and returning players should attend the mini-camp. Players should wear shorts, socks, cleats, a sturdy shirt, and bring water. Rugby involves a lot of running. Players should show up at least 15 minutes early to sign in and get ready.
