State of the City is Looking Good

It was nice to see so many Dixon residents at the Chamber-sponsored State of the City Address. There were nearly 50 people in attendance and chairs were set up for those who wanted to benefit from the talks but not necessarily the breakfast. Overall, the city leaders in this community talked with optimism about the future--from business to schools.

I‘ve been going to these ‘State of the City Addresses’ for at least a decade if not more and folks have always been told they did not have to buy a breakfast ticket if they just wanted to hear the speakers. In fact, I know at least once I was one of those not buying a ticket because I was covering the story for the newspaper or—maybe it was because I was on a diet. In any case, if anyone had made that call to the Chamber of Commerce to question why they had to pay to hear the ‘state of the city’ address, he or she would have gotten a cheery explanation, I’m sure.  Take note for next year’s event.

Downtown State Farm Open Saturday

The new State Farm agent in downtown Dixon, Olimpia Garner, has announced that she will now be open on Saturdays by appointment thanks to the hiring of new staff member, Ana Tejeda. You might recognize Ana’s friendly face from her employment with the Downtown Dixon Business Association. (DDBA is running its association with Board volunteers until further notice due to more budget cuts.)

Olimpia is thrilled that Ana is bilingual. Ana will work Monday, Wednesdays, and Friday as well. The office is at 175 N. First Street and you can call for more information: (707) 676-5600.

Learn How to Get Better Publicity

The Solano Small Business Development Center and The Write Mind PR are teaming up to bring a class on getting better publicity for business owners, non-profits, and churches.

It will be held Thursday, February 28, at the Chamber office /Transportation Center, 220 North Jefferson, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Participants will learn how to identify newsworthy elements of business; how to write an interesting press release for increased readership; will understand a few basics of journalism that will increase the likelihood of news being published; and, most importantly, attendees will leave class with a workable quarterly plan. Cost is $25 and pre-registration is required.

If you have questions, call me at (707) 678-6262.

Time for Annual Methodist Tea

The annual Dixon United Methodist Church Tea will be on Saturday, March 2.  Seating starts at 11:30 am and guests are encouraged to wear their poodle skirts and saddle shoes!

This year’s theme is the 1950s and the Honeybee Trio will be performing tunes from the 50’s and 60’s, according to chairwoman, Suzanne Galloway.

“The singing group has had rave reviews from anyone and everyone who has seen them at other venues,” she said of the young women who expertly harmonize their songs similar to the Andrews Sisters of the 1940s.

Tickets are $25 and include a door prize ticket—and there are so many prizes that almost everyone walks away with a gift. The tickets are available at the church, located at 209 N. Jefferson across from the Dixon Chamber. This event is a real treat for women and I recommend the experience!
