“We’ve wanted to do this since we chartered our own club but thanks to some very enthusiastic students, a great advisor, and a lot of help from fellow Kiwanis member, Matt Swanson, we’ve built a solid foundation for long term,” said Dixon Kiwanis Club President Suzanne Lorente. Marc Rodriguez, a history teacher at the school is the club advisor

“If you can teach youth to serve while they are young, they will serve the rest of their lives,” she said.

The new club has already sent two high school students, Myers and Angelica Herrera to last weekend’s Key Leadership Camp—a weekend long session that trains students into leadership positions in the club and in the community.

“We have a lot of service-oriented students who are looking for ways to get involved, to make a difference,” said Swanson, who is working with Clermont and the many club members along with Rodriguez. “If there are needs out there, we want to know about them, so we invite people in the school and the community to get in touch with us to see how we might help.”

The club is meeting every two weeks on campus during lunch. The charter members include the officers and Marisa Cuevas, Miguel Cuiroz, Serena, deTorres, Kijana Drummon, Amairani Gomez, Alex Goumas, Alexis Gutierrez, Karina Lupercio, Angie Lyle, Jesse Martinez, Stephanie Medina, Megan Paxton, and Kayla Smith.

Key Club International, a service leadership program of Kiwanis International, is the oldest and largest service program for high school students, and gives its members opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership skills. Key Club attributes its success to the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others.
