One might say Maria Ramirez is living the Mexican and American Dream. Born and raised in Mexico, Maria educated herself as a young woman in the field of fashion and for many years did fashion design, drawing and creating beautiful dresses and gowns including her own wedding dress.

While busy raising four children these past 24 years here, Maria has always been very motivated and always sought more education after not getting any in her homeland. She took on a new passion while living here in Dixon and attended beauty school in Fairfield. After learning that Mexican women’s hair required different applciations of bleaches and toners than her caucasian counterparts, she very quickly became the expert in Latino hair, became an instructor, and taught for two years specializing in color.
“Mexican women’s hair, if bleached, turns orange. I learned how to do highlights with special toners and I use good brands,” she said.
Jeannette Lozano, who graduated in February from the beauty academywho works in the salon with Maria, and says Maria is too shy.
“We have a full service salon here,” Jeannette said. “What I like about her is that if someone comes in and wants to go from brown to all blonde hair, she tells them better options to keep their hair healthy. She will not damage anyone’s hair,” she said with obvious admiration. Jeannette says that feels much more comfortable in the new salon as it is cozier. The salon was located for three years in the ‘Polaris’ building on Highway 113. The more affordable rent is what brought Maria downtown and the two are very happy with the move.
“The first week we had no phone and the company had to put in new wiring--but my phone is ringing now!” Maria said. It’s her skills and her prices that keep the shop busy, she added. The salon is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm and also offers men’s haircuts. She will also do special appointments on a Sunday or Monday. The phone is (707) 678-5671.
