Nothing New from Morning View

Once the talk of the town, the Morning View movie studio plan appears to have died. At least, CEO Carissa Carpenter has not had anything to announce for weeks.

I checked with some of the people with whom she’d often been in contact with. City Manager Jim Lindley said he hasn’t heard from her or her reps for weeks. Brianna Boyd at the Trib says she still gets occasional emails from Carpenter, but there’s no new news to report. Dixon Patch only received a change in Carpenter’s email address.

What happened to all the breathless announcements, the $2.8 billion to be spent on the studios, the land purchases, and the $100,000 to be given to the city of Dixon’s for staff and consultant time?

This whole affair is similar to the clever old tale by Hans Christian Anderson, The Emperor’s New Clothes. A vain emperor has “clothes” made by shysters who tell him that only intelligent people or those who are worthy of their government positions will be able to see them. Meanwhile, the emperor begins to wear the “clothes,” but is actually buck naked. Of course, adults, not wanting to be seen as stupid, or not wanting to jeopardize their positions, all compliment the emperor on his choice of clothing. However, one day during a royal public procession, a little boy cries out, “But he hasn’t got anything on!” and others take up the cry. The emperor, not wanting to concede his error, continues as though nothing is amiss.

We could put Carpenter in the role of the emperor, surrounding herself with a cloak of extravagant public announcements and associates. Many bought into the cloak completely, and few wanted to be seen as negative and non-civic-minded. The role of the little boy was finally taken by the Sacramento Bee’s lengthy coverage of Carpenter’s disreputable past.

On the other hand, will we ever know if Carpenter, even if extravagant, actually did try to raise the money needed, and go ahead with the dream? Or will we learn that the whole thing was a fabrication, designed to make her the center of attention and have people kowtowing to her for jobs and a piece of the action?

I have a feeling this chapter of Dixon’s history isn’t completely over yet.
