Bird and Castanon Sworn In as New Council Members

New faces on Dixon's city council will help shape Dixon's future.

In front of friends, family and relatives filling Dixon's council chambers, Steve Bird and Jerry Castanon, Sr. were sworn in as Dixon's new city council members Tuesday evening at a regular council meeting. This followed a reception in the city hall lobby.

Incumbent mayor Jack Batchelor was also sworn in to continue in that position.

Bird, Castanon and Batchelor will serve four-year terms.

Departing from the council are Rick Fuller and Mike Ceremello.

In one vote during the regular council meeting which followed the swearing-in, council members Besneatte, Castanon and Batchelor voted for a resolution tied to the Safe Routes to School Plan Update, and inclusion of the plan in the Solano Transportation Authority's Countywide Safe Routes to School Plan. Voting against it were council members Bogue and Bird. Apparently associated with the plan is the projected B Street pedestrian railroad undercrossing, for which some funding has been awarded.

While on the subject of the B Street tunnel, see what else they are used for.

An over-crossing for bikes and pedestrians would be much cheaper and, more importantly, safer. However, except for a few over-imbibers most folks have no problem recognizing when a train is coming and when it is safe to cross the tracks. Under-crossing is solution to which there is (almost) no problem leading to a serious problem (graffitti, drug use, mugging, etc) for which solution will be very costly.

There is some danger at train crossings, especially when a pedestrian is aware of a train coming from one direction, but not aware of a train coming from the other direction at about the same time. Just the other day a woman teacher was apparently photographing trains in the Sacramento area and was killed by a Union Pacific train. The least expensive answer to the problem near the "train station" in Dixon would be to have fences and pedestrian crossing arms (similar to the crossing arms for cars, but smaller), without an under- or overpass. The Caltrain commuter trains on the San Francisco peninsula use these at some stations.

Bil, a better regulated "at grade" crossing is a perfect solution.
Since 1871 Dixon residents have lived with the train tracks and all that comes with them. I don't believe that a tunnel is needed.

We just visited the EU and they don't have tunnels in the small towns (mid-size also) and tracks are wide open. They don't have the problem and the government does not mandate tunnels or overcrossings. Even on the bullet train, we went right by the stations with people standing next to the tracks. On the trip from Belgium to Czech we came across many places just like Dixon where people walked along the tracks to get to the station and platform... if they had a platform.

Didn't O'Reilly's just close on the other side of town? There's a 'for lease' sign on the building.

Great to see the 4th graders getting ready for their 5th grade camp at Alliance Redwoods. I took myRead More 6th graders there for many years and Alliance has an outstanding program that keeps the kids focused on environmental education and stewardship. The night hike through the redwoods was always their favorite (along with the zip line). Note: No need to bring snacks as the dining hall meals has everything you will need, but you may want to bring some extra money for the gift shop. Dan Mattingly/Retired Teacher

Thanks for the post Dean. The Dixon VFW has contributed several thousand dollars so far to bothRead More homes in Dixon and will be contributing a lot more in the future for these Vets. The housing program is managed by the North Bay Coummity Action Council (formerly known as the Fairfield/Suisun CAC). The Vets are very grateful for all the community support. One project we are trying to get funding or donations for is we need approximately 50 cubic yards ofRead More top soil to even out the back and side yards and bring them up even with the patio in the back.
