PUSHBACK Rewinds the Best of Rock 'N' Roll

Dixon cover band combines best rock music of each decade for an enriching sound that is not to be missed

I had the pleasure last month of a private concert with the members of PUSHBACK, a rock ‘n’ roll cover band consisting of brothers John and Brian Young, and Dixon locals Randy Walker and Joe Giardino.

PUSHBACK's members found one another in late 2009 with members coming from Los Fiascos and The Walker Blues Band.

Since forming, they have played roughly 15 shows spanning from Pleasanton to Auburn. The band believes in keeping their music local playing venues within a 100-mile radius of Dixon.

Lead Vocals and Guitar John Young took to the band life at age 10, playing in hard rock and blues bands like Led Zeppelin, KISS, AC/DC, and the Rolling Stones. Many of the bands major influences are a product of what they grew up listening to.

"The Beatles are the main reason why I wanted a career in music," John Young said.

Guitar star and custom pick designer Randy Walker has played professionally since his teens and is considered to be one of the most influential guitarists in the Sacramento Valley. A true appreciator of great musicianship, his love for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen are apparent during his guitar solos.

Bass guitarist and contributor to his church’s worship team, Joe Giardino may appear to be the quiet of band member, but make no mistake his skill at the bass guitar adds cohesive balance to the band’s repertoire.

Multi-talented drummer and vocalist Brian Young has tremendous influence on the band’s raw live sound. His ‘80s pop and ‘90s grunge influence allow for every member of a rock and roll family to enjoy the sounds PUSHBACK has to offer.

While the members of PUSHBACK enjoy playing smaller venues, they hope to play one of the stages at the Dixon May Fair this year they said. Although their ambitions include playing local venues and the May Fair, they would also like to grow into a long-term band.

"We would all like to experience a few years of calm, drama-free co-existence,” Brian Young said. “We'd like to be one of those bands that finds a way to get along and continue to play and grow over the years."

PUSHBACK attributes much of their success to the loyal following comprised of family and friends and also the Dixon community. They said that some of their best venues are located in Dixon. They have played Bud's Pub and Grill, The Buckhorn and Dawson's.

Next up for the dynamic four-man band will be a performance scheduled on St. Patrick's Day at the Owl Club in Roseville. Also, those interested in listening to more of what the band has to offer can find their music on their Facebook page under the band’s name.

With their dedication to their craft and their musical chops, PUSHBACK will be a band that all Dixon residents will come to know in the near future as their sound continues to influence the music community.

My private concert almost made me forget that I was there to work on a story about the group. Check out interpretation of Chris Isaac's Wicked Game, and a brief video snip-it of other songs they perform.
