Harry Potter to Work His Magic Friday at the Dixon Library

A Harry Potter Party is planned for Friday at the Dixon Public Library. Harry Potter Pictionary Anyone?

The magic of Harry Potter extends far beyond the books and movies he stars in – on Friday it will turn the into Hogwarts Academy for Witches and Wizards so that it may host a Harry Potter Party.

But this party isn’t for any wizard or witch wannabes – only those who are between the ages of 13 and 18, and have read at least five books from the popular series will be invited to the event.

The Harry Potter party is the brainchild of Dixon Public Library’s Children’s/Young Adult Services Librarian Katrina Bergen.

“The first thing we are going to do is sort everybody,” explains Bergen, who has held fun events throughout the summer as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program. “The houses are Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. Then they are going to be on teams and they are doing to do a scavenger hunt. They’ll have to find items around the library.”

After a bit of scavenger hunting, participants will choose some flavors to make “potions,” Bergen said.

“We’ll have at least five flavors,” she said. “They can mix them or put the right amount of soda water in them.”

Friday’s Harry Potter Party will also feature Harry Potter Pictionary, crafts, movies, pizza, cake and a raffle. With the final film in the series in theaters “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2,” Bergen said it’s a good time to celebrate Harry Potter with a little party.

Friday’s party is being made possible by a generous donation from the Dixon Kiwanis Club Bergen said.

What is it about Harry Potter that children, teens and adults find so appealing?

Bergen said: “I think it’s the way she writes about good and evil. There’s just some truth to it.”

The fun begins at the Dixon Public Library at 6 p.m., and lasts until 10 p.m. For more information contact Bergen by e-mail at bergenk@dixonlibrary.com or at (707) 693-2747. Visit the library’s Facebook Page for updates.
